Walnuts and endothelial function in hypercholesterolemic subjects.

چکیده
Hypercholesterolemic Subjects To the Editor: Ros et al1 recently reported that substituting walnuts for monounsaturated fat in a Mediterranean-type diet improves endothelial function in hypercholesterolemic subjects. The investigators explain that nuts contain sizable amounts of antioxidants, as well as L-arginine and -linolenic acid, which might also confer additional antiatherogenic properties. I should emphasize, however, that a walnut-enriched diet contains high magnesium levels (ie, 169 elements of magnesium per 100 g of nut). We previously demonstrated2 that magnesium supplementation in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) was associated with significant improvement in brachial artery endothelial function and exercise tolerance. Our group also demonstrated that oral magnesium supplementation inhibits platelet-dependent thrombosis in CAD patients, independent of platelet aggregation or P-selectin expression, and was evident despite aspirin therapy.3 Magnesium is also an antioxidant4 and therefore may additively alter lipid profile and improve endothelial function. Therefore, the magnesium found in walnuts may explain some of the beneficial effects described by Ros et al.1

A walnut diet improves endothelial function in hypercholesterolemic subjects: a randomized crossover trial.
BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies suggest that nut intake decreases coronary artery disease (CAD) risk. Nuts have a cholesterol-lowering effect that partly explains this benefit. Endothelial dysfunction is associated with CAD and its risk factors and is reversed by antioxidants and marine n-3 fatty acids. Walnuts are a rich source of both antioxidants and alpha-linolenic acid, a plant n-3 fatt...
متن کاملEffects of Walnut Consumption on Endothelial Function in Type 2 Diabetic Subjects
OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of daily walnut consumption on endothelial function, cardiovascular biomarkers, and anthropometric measures in type 2 diabetic individuals. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS This study was a randomized, controlled, single-blind, crossover trial. Twenty-four participants with type 2 diabetes (mean age 58 years; 14 women and 10 men) were randomly assigned to one of ...
متن کاملEffects of diets high in walnuts and flax oil on hemodynamic responses to stress and vascular endothelial function.
BACKGROUND Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk, although the mechanisms are incompletely understood. In a previous article, we showed significant reductions in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and several markers of inflammation with increasing intake of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) from walnuts and flax. OBJECTIVE To examine effects of ALA on ca...
متن کاملModulation of endothelial function by walnuts and sex hormones.
and Sex Hormones To the Editor: We read with interest the recent article by Dr Ros and colleagues1 dealing with the relationship between a walnut diet and endothelial function in hypercholesterolemic subjects. The results of their study demonstrated that the walnut diet significantly improved endothelium-dependent vasodilation. The authors indicated that changes of endothelium-dependent vasodil...
متن کاملEffects of Walnuts on Endothelial Function in Overweight Adults with Visceral Obesity: A Randomized, Controlled, Crossover Trial
OBJECTIVES Metabolic syndrome is a precursor of diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Walnut ingestion has been shown to reduce CVD risk indices in diabetes. This randomized controlled crossover trial was performed to investigate the effects of daily walnut consumption on endothelial function and other biomarkers of cardiac risk in a population of overweight individuals with visceral adipo...
