Detecting the Transition From Pop III to Pop II Stars

چکیده
We discuss the cosmological significance of the transition from the Pop III to Pop II mode of star formation in the early universe, and when and how it may occur in primordial galaxies. Observations that could detect this transition include those of element abundances in metal-poor Galactic halo stars, and of the helium reionization and associated heating of the intergalactic medium. We suggest that gamma-ray bursts may be a better probe of the end of the first-stars epoch than of

Population III stars : hidden or disappeared ?
A Pop III/Pop II transition from massive to normal stars is predicted to occur when the metallicity of the star forming gas crosses the critical range Zcr = 10 −5±1 Z⊙. To investigate the cosmic implications of such process we use numerical simulations which follow the evolution, metal enrichment and energy deposition of both Pop III and Pop II stars. We find that: (i) due to inefficient heavy ...
متن کاملThe Extended Starformation History of the First Generation of Stars, and the Reionization of Cosmic Hydrogen
Population-III (Pop-III) starformation (SF) is thought to be quenched when the metallicity of the starforming gas has reached a critical level. At high redshift, when the general intergalactic medium (IGM) was enriched with metals, the fraction of primordial gas already collapsed in minihalos (above the Jeans mass but below the mass corresponding to the efficient atomic cooling threshold for SF...
متن کاملEarly chemical enrichment of the universe and the role of very massive pop III stars
In this paper the role of very massive pop III stars in the chemical enrichment of the early universe is discussed. We first compare our predictions with the abundance ratios measured in the high redshift Lymanα forest to check whether they are compatible with the values predicted by assuming that the early universe was enriched by massive pop III stars. We conclude that to explain the observed...
متن کاملThree Epochs of Star Formation in the High Redshift Universe
We investigate the impact of an early population of massive stars on their surroundings. Dissociation of molecular hydrogen by strong UV emission from such stars is expected to produce a global transition in the cooling mechanism of minihalos at a redshift of approximately 30, strongly inhibiting star formation until more massive halos can collapse. Furthermore, chemical enrichment from Pop III...
متن کاملEvolving Spectra of Pop III Stars: Consequences for Cosmological Reionization
We examine the significance of the first metal-free stars (Pop III) for the cosmological reionization of H I and He II. These stars have unusually hard spectra, with the integrated ionizing photon rates from a Pop III stellar cluster for H I and He II being 1.6 and 10 times stronger respectively than those from a Pop II cluster. For the currently favored cosmology, we find that Pop III stars al...
