چکیده

The 2004 Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake had an average source duration of about 500 sec. and a rupture length of 1 ,200–1,300 km. The seismic moment, M0, determined with a finite source model, was 6.5 1022 N-m, which corresponds to Mw=9.18. Allowing for the uncertainties in the current M0 determinations, Mw is in the range of 9.1 to 9.3. The tsunami magnitude Mt is 9.1, suggesting that the overall size of the tsunami is consistent with what is expected of an earthquake with Mw=9.1 to 9.3. The short-period body-wave magnitude m̂b is 7.25, which is considerably smaller than that of large earthquakes with a comparable Mw. The m̂b versus Mw relationship indicates that, overall, the Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake is not a tsunami earthquake. The tectonic environment of the rupture zone of the Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake is very different from that of other great earthquakes, such as the 1960 Chile and the 1964 Alaska earthquakes. This difference may be responsible for the unique source characteristics of this earthquake. The extremely large size of the Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake is reflected in the large amplitude of the long-period phase, the W phase, even in the early part of the seismograms before the arrival of the S wave. This information could be used for various early warning purposes. DOI: 10.1193/1.2201969

Structural context of the great Sumatra-Andaman Islands earthquake

[1] A new three-dimensional seismic model and relocated regional seismicity are used to illuminate the great Sumatra-Andaman Islands earthquake of December 26, 2004. The earthquake initiated where the incoming Indian Plate lithosphere is warmest and the dip of the WadatiBenioff zone is least steep along the subduction zone extending from the Andaman Trench to the Java Trench. Anomalously high t...

Wavelet analysis of the seismograms of the 2004 Sumatra- Andaman earthquake and its application to tsunami early warning

[1] We applied the wavelet transform in an attempt to detect long-period components early in a seismogram. We analyzed the displacement seismograms of the 26 December 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake (Mw = 9.2) and the 28 March 2005 Nias earthquake (Mw = 8.7). Wavelet analysis is able to clearly distinguish the amplitudes of the long-period W phase between the seismograms of the two earthquakes ...

Crustal dilatation observed by GRACE after the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake.

We report the detection of an earthquake by a space-based measurement. The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites observed a +/-15-microgalileo gravity change induced by the great December 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake. Coseismic deformation produces sudden changes in the gravity field by vertical displacement of Earth's layered density structure and by changing the densit...

The great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of 26 December 2004.

The two largest earthquakes of the past 40 years ruptured a 1600-kilometer-long portion of the fault boundary between the Indo-Australian and southeastern Eurasian plates on 26 December 2004 [seismic moment magnitude (Mw) = 9.1 to 9.3] and 28 March 2005 (Mw = 8.6). The first event generated a tsunami that caused more than 283,000 deaths. Fault slip of up to 15 meters occurred near Banda Aceh, S...

Rupture process of the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake.

The 26 December 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake initiated slowly, with small slip and a slow rupture speed for the first 40 to 60 seconds. Then the rupture expanded at a speed of about 2.5 kilometers per second toward the north northwest, extending 1200 to 1300 kilometers along the Andaman trough. Peak displacements reached approximately 15 meters along a 600-kilometer segment of the plate boun...
