Quasar Strömgren Spheres before Cosmological Reionization

چکیده
Ionizing sources embedded in the neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) before cosmological reionization generate discrete HII regions. We show that a sufficiently bright quasar (for example, one tenth as luminous as that recently discovered by Fan et al.) can ionize a large volume, allowing the transmission of a substantial fraction of the flux of its intrinsic Lyα emission line on both sides of the Lyα wavelength. The observed line profile is richly informative. We show that a sufficiently accurate, high spectral resolution (R ≈ 10) measurement of the line profile of a bright quasar is feasible using the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) as well as large ground-based telescopes. Such a measurement has two potentially important applications. First, the red side of the Lyα emission line provides a way to measure the quasar lifetime. Second, the blue side provides a direct measure of the density fluctuations of the intergalactic medium at the quasar redshift. The estimate of the absorption of the red side is limited by the accuracy to which the intrinsic profile of the Lyα emission line is known. The blue side, however, does not sensitively depend on the intrinsic profile, because the former is much narrower than the latter. A bright quasar residing in a dense and largely neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) at high redshifts (z ∼ > 6) will be surrounded by a large cosmological Strömgren sphere. The quasar’s spectrum will then show a sharp increase in resonant Lyman line absorption at wavelengths approaching and shorter than that corresponding to the Strömgren sphere’s boundary along the line of sight. We show here t...

The intrinsic Lyα emission lines of normal galaxies before reionization are much absorbed by the damping wing of the Gunn-Peterson trough, rendering their direct detection nearly impossible, if their intrinsic line widths are less than ∼ 100km/s. High redshift luminous quasars prior to the completion of cosmo-logical reionization at z ∼ 6, on the other hand, are capable of producing large HII r...
متن کاملGrowth and anisotropy of ionization fronts near high-redshift quasars in the MassiveBlack simulation
We use radiative transfer to study the growth of ionized regions around the brightest, z = 8 quasars in a large cosmological hydrodynamic simulation that includes black hole growth and feedback (the MassiveBlack simulation). We find that in the presence of the quasars the comoving H II bubble radii reach 10 Mpc h−1 after 20 Myr while with the stellar component alone the H II bubbles are smaller...
متن کاملReionization of the Universe and the Photoevaporation of Cosmological Minihalos
The first sources of ionizing radiation to condense out of the dark and neutral IGM sent ionization fronts sweeping outward through their surroundings, overtaking other condensed objects and photoevaporating them. This feedback of universal reionization on cosmic structure formation is demonstrated here by gas dynamical simulations, including radiative transfer, for a cosmological minihalo of d...
