چکیده

Multimodal interactive maps are a solution for presenting spatial information to visually impaired people. In this paper, we present an interactive multimodal map prototype that is based on a tactile paper map, a multi-touch screen and audio output. We first describe the different steps for designing an interactive map: drawing and printing the tactile paper map, choice of multitouch technology, interaction technologies and the software architecture. Then we describe the method used to assess user satisfaction. We provide data showing that an interactive map – although based on a unique, elementary, double tap interaction – has been met with a high level of user satisfaction. Interestingly, satisfaction is independent of a user’s age, previous visual experience or Braille experience. This prototype will be used as a platform to design advanced interactions for spatial learning.

Interactivity Improves Usability of Geographic Maps for Visually Impaired People

Tactile relief maps are used by visually impaired people to acquire mental representation of space, but they retain important limitations (limited amount of information, braille text, etc.). Interactive maps may overcome these limitations. However, usability of these two types of maps had never been compared. It is then unknown whether interactive maps are equivalent or even better solutions th...

From Open Geographical Data to Tangible Maps: Improving the Accessibility of Maps for Visually Impaired People

Visual maps must be transcribed into (interactive) raised-line maps to be accessible for visually impaired people. However, these tactile maps suffer from several shortcomings: they are long and expensive to produce, they cannot display a large amount of information, and they are not dynamically modifiable. A number of methods have been developed to automate the production of raised-line maps, ...

An Approach for Improving Computer Human Interaction of Visually Impaired People

This paper introduces two research projects about the universal designed interfaces to improve visually impaired people’s computer human interaction. The one is the touch panel interaction of visually impaired people. Our final goal is to develop the universal-designed plugins that translate graphics into interactive contents with sound and touch interaction. As an instance, we proposed “One Oc...

Tangible Maps for Visually Impaired Users: Shape-Changing Perspectives

Interactive maps for visually impaired people are rarely dynamic and if so, very expensive. We developed a low-cost tangible tabletop interface that enables visually impaired users to dynamically construct maps. To do so, we designed a novel type of physical icons, called Tangible Reels. In this paper, we discuss how actuated Tangible Reels could be used to provide visually impaired users with ...

An Interactive Wireless Communication System for Visually Impaired People Using City Bus Transport

Visually impaired people have difficulty accessing information about public transportation systems. Several systems have been developed for assisting visually impaired and blind people to use the city bus. Most systems provide only one-way communication and require high-cost and complex equipment. The purpose of this study is to reduce the difficulties faced by visually impaired people when tak...
