چکیده
This work examines the quality factors (Q factors) of resonance associated with the axial and transverse vibrations of single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) resonators through the use of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Specifically, the work investigates the effect of device length, diameter, and chirality, as well as temperature, on the resonant frequency and quality factor of these devices and benchmarks the results of MD simulations against classical theories of energy dissipation. The quality factor (Q) associated with transverse vibration is found to increase with increasing device length (Q L, where 0.8< h< 1.4) and decrease with increasing device diameter (Q D , where 1.4 1 when below Debye temperature due to quantum effects, and Q gradually recovers the classical T 1 dependence when above Debye temperature. Our temperature dependence is in contrast to prior studies that suggested Q T , where 0< b< 1. The observed size and temperature dependencies by us have many deviations from existing classical theories of energy dissipation, possibly due to phonon confinement effects in these nanostructures and temperature quantum effects. A Molecular Dynamics Modeling on Cantilevered Triple-Walled Carbon Nanotube Resonators
We introduce intertube interactions of a cantilevered triple-walled carbon-nanotube (TWCNT) resonators via classical molecular dynamics simulations. The fundamental frequencies of TWCNT resonators were less than those of singleand double-walled carbon nanotubes of a given diameter because of the increasing intertube disturbance. Our results imply that for a nanotube with a given diameter, the f...
متن کاملOscillation control of carbon nanotube mechanical resonator by electrostatic interaction induced retardation
Despite the superb intrinsic properties of carbon nanotube mechanical resonators, the quality factors at room temperature are 1,000 or less, even in vacuum, which is much lower than that of mechanical resonators fabricated using a top-down approach. This study demonstrates the improvement of the quality factor and the control of nonlinearity of the mechanical resonance of the cantilevered nanot...
متن کاملParametric amplification in single-walled carbon nanotube nanoelectromechanical resonators
The low quality factor (Q) of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) resonators has limited their sensitivity in sensing application. To this end, we employ the technique of parametric amplification by modulating the spring constant of SWNT resonators at twice the resonant frequency and achieve 10 times Q enhancement. The highest Q obtained at room temperature is around 700, which is 3–4 times be...
متن کاملElectrostatic deflections and electromechanical resonances of carbon nanotubes
Static and dynamic mechanical deflections were electrically induced in cantilevered, multiwalled carbon nanotubes in a transmission electron microscope. The nanotubes were resonantly excited at the fundamental frequency and higher harmonics as revealed by their deflected contours, which correspond closely to those determined for cantilevered elastic beams. The elastic bending modulus as a funct...
متن کاملCarbon nanotubes as ultrahigh quality factor mechanical resonators.
We have observed the transversal vibration mode of suspended carbon nanotubes at millikelvin temperatures by measuring the single-electron tunneling current. The suspended nanotubes are actuated contact-free by the radio frequency electric field of a nearby antenna; the mechanical resonance is detected in the time-averaged current through the nanotube. Sharp, gate-tunable resonances due to the ...
