Disseminated Herpes Simplex Virus with Fulminant Hepatitis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Disseminated herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a rare cause of acute fulminant liver failure. We hereby present a case series of three patients with acute disseminated HSV with necrotizing hepatitis successfully treated with a week course of acyclovir. Early empiric administration of acyclovir therapy while awaiting confirmatory tests is critical in this potentially lethal disease.

Fatal fulminant herpes simplex hepatitis secondary to tongue piercing in an immunocompetent adult: a case report
INTRODUCTION Herpes simplex infection is most commonly a benign, self-limiting disease with mucocutaneous lesions and mild viremia. Immunosuppressed patients are at a higher risk of disseminated infection, as are neonates and pregnant women. The incidence of fulminant herpes simplex virus hepatitis is extremely low, and the diagnosis is often missed due to the lack of specific signs or symptoms...
متن کاملAntiviral-Resistant Fulminant Herpes Hepatitis in Pregnancy
Fulminant herpes hepatitis with disseminated extrahepatic involvement in pregnancy is rare and carries a high mortality risk. Although acyclovir remains standard first-line therapy, effective management of acyclovir-resistant disseminated herpes simplex virus (HSV) in pregnancy remains elusive. We present a case of disseminated HSV resistant to both acyclovir and foscarnet, the first double-age...

متن کاملFulminant Hepatitis Due to Father-to-Newborn Transmission of Herpes Simplex Virus type 1
We describe a case of a severe neonatal infection by herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 acquired postnatally from his father. The delivery and the first days of life were normal. He developed liver failure and disseminated intravascular coagulation when he was 19 days old. He was treated with intravenous acyclovir and the outcome was favorable. This case underlines that prevention of post-natal ...
متن کاملHerpes simplex virus hepatitis - it's high time we consider empiric treatment.
Fulminant hepatitis is an uncommon complication of herpes simplex virus infection. Patients at risk, in particular pregnant women and immunosuppressed patients presenting with fulminant liver failure, receiving delayed acyclovir intervention may lose significant liver parenchyma prompting the need for liver transplantation. The diagnosis is often not straight forward due to the lack of specific...
