چکیده

The experiments of Leptos et al. [1] show that the displacements of small particles affected by swimming microorganisms achieve a non-Gaussian distribution, which nevertheless scales diffusively. We use a simple model where the particles undergo repeated ‘kicks’ due to the swimmers to explain the shape of the distribution. Leptos et al. study the microscopic algae Chlamydomonas reinhardthii. They measure experimentally the probability density function (PDF) of tracer displacements, ρXt(x). Thus, ρXt(x) dx is the probability of observing a particle displacement Xt ∈ [x, x+ dx] after waiting a time t. The range of t is chosen small enough that the swimmers are ‘ballistic,’ so their velocity is roughly constant. At zero volume fraction (φ = 0), the distribution ρXt(x) is Gaussian, due solely to molecular diffusivity. For higher number densities, exponential tails appear and the Gaussian core broadens. Leptos et al. fit their the distribution to the sum of a Gaussian and an exponential:

PREDICTION OF EARTHQUAKE INDUCED DISPLACEMENTS OF SLOPES USING HYBRID SUPPORT VECTOR REGRESSION WITH PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION

Displacements induced by earthquake can be very large and result in severe damage to earth and earth supported structures including embankment dams, road embankments, excavations and retaining walls. It is important, therefore, to be able to predict such displacements. In this paper, a new approach to prediction of earthquake induced displacements of slopes (EIDS) using hybrid support vector re...

Enhancement of biomixing by swimming algal cells in two-dimensional films.

Fluid mixing in active suspensions of microorganisms is important to ecological phenomena and presents a fascinating stochastic process. We investigate the mixing produced by swimming unicellular algal cells (Chlamydomonas) in quasi-two-dimensional liquid films by simultaneously tracking the motion of the cells and that of microscopic passive tracer particles advected by the fluid. The reduced ...

0 Se p 20 05 Theorem on the Distribution of Short Time Single Particle

The distribution of the initial very short-time displacements of a single particle is considered for a class of classical systems with Gaussian initial velocity distributions and arbitrary initial particle positions. A very brief sketch is given of a rather intricate and lengthy proof that for this class of systems the n-th order cumulants behave as t2n for all n > 2, rather than as tn. We also...

N ov 2 00 6 Short - time fluctuations of displacements and work

A recent theorem giving the initial behavior of very short-time fluctuations of particle displacements in classical many-body systems is discussed. It has applications to equilibrium and non-equilibrium systems, one of which is a series expansion of the distribution of work fluctuations around a Gaussian function. To determine the time-scale at which this series expansion is valid, we present p...

1 7 Ju n 20 05 Theorem on the Distribution of Short - Time Particle Displacements with Physical Applications

The distribution of the initial short-time displacements of particles is considered for a class of classical systems under rather general conditions on the dynamics and the distribution of initial conditions. This class of systems contains canonical equilibrium of a Hamiltonian system as a special case. We prove that for this class of systems the nth order cumulants of the initial short-time di...
