چکیده

This paper presents the implementation and validation of a new 3D deformable model method, based on the Mumford-Shah functional for segmentation of threedimensional real-time ultrasound. An experiment on 10 patients with primary hypertension was carried out to compare three segmentation methods for quantification of right and left ventricular ejection fraction: (1) manual tracing by an expert cardiologist, (2) 2D parametric deformable model, and (3) 3D implicit deformable model implemented with a level set framework. Deformable model segmentations were performed on denoised data using a (3D+Time) brushlet expansion. The clinical study showed superior performance of the deformable model in assessing ejection fraction when compared to MRI measures. It also showed that the three-dimensional deformable model improved EF measures, which is explained by a more accurate segmentation of small and convoluted ventricular shapes when integrating the third spatial dimension.

A Hybrid 3D Colon Segmentation Method Using Modified Geometric Deformable Models

Introduction: Nowadays virtual colonoscopy has become a reliable and efficient method of detecting primary stages of colon cancer such as polyp detection. One of the most important and crucial stages of virtual colonoscopy is colon segmentation because an incorrect segmentation may lead to a misdiagnosis.  Materials and Methods: In this work, a hybrid method based on Geometric Deformable Models...

Medial-based Deformable Models in Non-convex Shape-spaces for Medical Image Segmentation using Genetic Algorithms

We explore the application of genetic algorithms (GA) to deformable models through the proposition of a novel method for medical image segmentation that combines GA with non-convex, localized, medial-based shape statistics. We replace the more typical gradient descent optimizer used in deformable models with GA, and the convex, implicit, global shape statistics with non-convex, explicit, locali...

Prostate Segmentation and Regions of Interest Detection in Transrectal Ultrasound Images

The early detection of prostate cancer plays a significant role in the success of treatment and outcome. To detect prostate cancer, imaging modalities such as TransRectal UltraSound (TRUS) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are relied on. MRI images are more comprehensible than TRUS images which are corrupted by noise such as speckles and shadowing. However, MRI screening is costly, often una...

Narrow band region-based active contours and surfaces for 2D and 3D segmentation

We describe a narrow band region approach for deformable curves and surfaces in the perspective of 2D and 3D image segmentation. Basically, we develop a region energy involving a fixed-width band around the curve or surface. Classical region-based methods, like the Chan-Vese model, often make strong assumptions on the intensity distributions of the searched object and background. In order to be...

I-48: Ultrasound Deformable Model for Virtual Surgery Simulation of Oocyte Retrieval in Infertility Programs

Background The use of a medical simulator should enhance the goals of minimally invasive surgery: patient safety, cosmesis, shortening the length of hospital admissions, and reducing cost. Using an innovative approach to the handling of ultrasound images in virtual reality simulation, this article describes a process that employs a hybrid model of deformable models that can be applied in the te...
