A Numerical Investigation of Mixed-layer Processes in the Arabian Sea

چکیده

My objectives for this ONR project were first to develop an ocean model that can accurately simulate Arabian-Sea mixed-layer variability at diurnal through annual time scales, and then to diagnose the processes that account for this variability in its solutions. I particularly wished to be able to simulate and understand the mixed-layer-thickness record determined from the WHOI mooring data at 15.5qN, 61.5qN from October 1994 to October 1995 (Weller et al., 1998). Another objective was to investigate the influence of mixed-layer diurnal variability on bloom dynamics in the region using a coupled physical/biological model.

Coupling of mixed layer processes and thermocline variations in the Arabian Sea

[1] This study presents an analysis of observed data sets from multiple sources, including observations from a network of Argo floats during (2002–2003), with the aim of investigating the role of the southwest monsoon circulation in affecting the interactions between the oceanic mixed layer and the underlying thermocline in the northern Indian Ocean. Examination of the seasonal cycle of the upp...

The Northeast Monsoon's impact on mixing, phytoplankton biomass and nutrient cycling in the Arabian Sea

In the northern Arabian Sea, atmospheric conditions during the Northeast (winter) Monsoon lead to deep convective mixing. Due to the proximity of the permanent pycnocline to the sea surface, this mixing does not penetrate below 125 m. However, a strong nitracline is also present and the deep convection results in signi"cant nitrate #ux into the surface waters. This leads to nitrate concentratio...

A four-dimensional validation of a coupled physical–biological model of the Arabian Sea

In this paper, we use a coupled biological/physical model to synthesize and understand observations taken during the US JGOFS Arabian Sea Process Study (ASPS). Its physical component is a variable-density, 4 1 2 -layer model; its biological component consists of a set of advective–diffusive equations in each layer that determine nitrogen concentrations in four compartments, namely, nutrients, p...

Moored observations of upper-ocean response to the monsoons in the Arabian Sea during 1994–1995

The role of surface forcing in the semiannual evolution of the upper-ocean temperature, salinity, and velocity fields in the Arabian Sea is examined. To do so, variability in the upper ocean in the central Arabian Sea was observed from an array of moorings deployed from October 1994 to October 1995. The Northeast (NE) Monsoon was characterized by moderate winds, clear skies, and dry air; sea-su...

Report of a Physical Oceanography Research Project over the Southern Continental Shelf of the Caspian Sea

Abstract The study presents monthly variations of seawater properties, monitoring water column stability and stratification over the southern shelf of the Caspian Sea which depends on collecting data. Field measurements were carried out during 13 cruises along the southern boundary of the sea. Spatial and temporal distributions of temperature, salinity and density were investigated. Monthl...
