Trade and Productivity: The Family Connection Redux

چکیده
We investigate the effects of human capital accumulation on trade and productivity by integrating a micro-founded education and fertility decision of households into a model of international trade with firm heterogeneity. Our theoretical framework leads to two testable implications: i) the export share of a country increases with the education level of its population, ii) the average profitability of firms located in a country also increases with the education level of its population. We find that these implications are supported by empirical evidence for a panel of OECD countries from 1960 to 2010. JEL classification: F12, F14, I20, J11.

Gravity Redux : Structural Estimation of Gravity Equations with Asymmetric Bilateral Trade Costs ∗ December 18 , 2007
Theoretical foundations for estimating gravity equations were enhanced recently in Anderson and van Wincoop (2003). Though elegant, the model assumes symmetric bilateral trade costs to generate an estimable set of structural equations. In reality, however, trade costs (and trade flows) are not bilaterally symmetric. To allow for asymmetric bilateral trade costs, we provide an alternative framew...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effect of Structural Changes and Trade Liberalization on Total Factor Productivity in Iran (1991-2018)
Structural change plays an important role in developing any economy, so understanding it is critical to make policies that increase total factor productivity. The structural change that leads to an efficient resource allocation after trade reforms is desirable; the key factor that can affect the relation of "structural change and trade liberalization" with productivity is the quality of institu...
متن کاملTrade-based technology transfer and Its Impact on the Iranian Economy: Using a CGE model
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of import of technology on Iranian Economy. We have used multi-sectoral and multi–regional computable general equilibrium GTAP model. Transfer of technology from one region to another is another factor effecting productivity. Trade is one of the channels that speeds the transfer of technology. The effect of a ten percent productivity shock, in...

A detailed retrospective of the Green Revolution, its achievement and limits in terms of agricultural productivity improvement, and its broader impact at social, environmental, and economic levels is provided. Lessons learned and the strategic insights are reviewed as the world is preparing a "redux" version of the Green Revolution with more integrative environmental and social impact combined ...
متن کاملThe Effects of China's Growth in Manufacturing Sector in the U.S. Economy
T his paper investigates the gain of bilateral trade between China and U.S. in manufacturing sectors when both countries play a role in asymmetric (biased) growth of international trade. Our model includes a special case of Biased Growth Theory in international trade. We collected labor productivity, export and import data by using classification of manufacturing industries, for U.S...
