چکیده
A 180 μm map and strip maps at 120 and 180 μm were obtained for the edge-on starburst galaxy NGC 253 with ISOPHOT, the photometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory. We compare these observations with those obtained by IRAS at 60 μm and 100 μm and derive the far–infrared spectral energy distribution at different locations in the galaxy. There is evidence for the presence of cold dust (T ≤ 20 K) both in the nucleus and in the disk. Extended emission dominated by cold dust is detected up to ∼ 15′ (∼ 10 kpc) along the major and minor axis; its spatial distribution is similar to that seen in the IRAS and ROSAT PSPC images. The emission along the minor axis is probably related to large-scale outflows of gas (superwinds) which originate in the nuclear starburst and maybe to star formation in the halo. The radial dependence of the dust temperature along the major axis is found using a radiative transfer code: we show that the dust scale length in the disk is ∼ 40% larger

We report on mid-infrared (MIR) continuum and line emission mapping of the nucleus of NGC 253. The data, with a resolution of 1.4, reveal a double-peaked arc-like [NeII] emission region. Comparison with published data shows that the [NeII] arc is centered on the nucleus of the galaxy. The brightest [NeII] source coincides with the infrared continuum peak. The interpretation of these results is ...

The interacting system Arp 284 consisting of the Wolf-Rayet galaxy NGC 7714 and its irregular companion NGC 7715 was observed using the Infrared Space Observatory1. Deconvolved ISOCAM maps of the galaxies using the 14.3 μm, 7.7 μm and 15 μm LW3, LW6 and LW9 filters, along with ISOPHOT spectrometry of the nuclear region of NGC 7714 were obtained and are presented. Strong ISOCAM emission was dete...

Hickson Compact Group (HCG) 31, consisting of the Wolf-Rayet galaxy NGC 1741 and its irregular dwarf companions, was observed using the Infrared Space Observatory. The deconvolved ISOCAM maps of the galaxies using the 7.7 µm and 14.3 µm (LW6 and LW3) filters are presented, along with ISOPHOT spec-trometry of the central starburst region of NGC 1741 and the nucleus of galaxy HCG 31A. متن کاملThe Nuclear Starburst in Ngc 253
We have obtained long-slit spectra of NGC 253 in the J, H, K, and N bands, broadband images in the J, H, and K s bands, narrowband images centered at the wavelengths of Brγ and H 2 (1,0)S(1), and imaging spectroscopy centered on [Ne II](12.8µm). We have subtracted a composite stellar spectrum from the galaxy spectrum to measure faint emission lines which otherwise would be buried in the complic...
متن کاملChandra Observations of the Evolving Core of the Starburst Galaxy NGC 253
Chandra observations of the core of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 reveal a heavily absorbed source of hard X-rays embedded within the nuclear starburst region. The source has an unabsorbed, 2 to 10 keV luminosity of ≥ 10 erg s and photoionizes the surrounding gas. We observe this source through a dusty torus with a neutral absorbing column density of NH ∼ 2 × 10 23 cm. The torus is hundre...
