چکیده

This paper presents an experimental and numerical study of unidirectional carbon fiber composites with a silicone matrix, loaded transversally to the fibers. The experiments show nonlinear behavior with significant strain softening under cyclic loading. The numerical study uses a plane-strain finite element continuum model of the composite material in which the fiber distribution is based on experimental observations and cohesive elements allow debonding to take place at the fiber/matrix interfaces. It is found that accurate estimates of the initial tangent stiffness measured in the experiments can be obtained without allowing for debonding, but this feature has to be included to capture the non-linear and strain-softening behavior. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. In a recent paper, Peng et al. (2006, "An Anisotropic Hyperelastic Constitutive Model With Fiber-Matrix Interaction for the Human Annulus Fibrosis," ASME J. Appl. Mech., 73(5), pp. 815-824) developed an anisotropic hyperelastic constitutive model for the human annulus fibrosus in which fiber-matrix interaction plays a crucial role in simulating experimental observations reported in the literatu...

Modification of exponential based hyperelastic strain energy to consider free stress initial configuration and Constitutive modeling

In this research, the exponential stretched based hyperelastic strain energy was modified to provide the unstressed initial configuration. To this end, as the first step, the model was calibrated by the experimental data to find the best material parameters. The fitting results indicated material stability in large deformations and basic loading modes. In the second step, the initial pseudo str...

Stiffening by fiber reinforcement in soft materials: a hyperelastic theory at large strains and its application.

This work defines an incompressible, hyperelastic theory of anisotropic soft materials at finite strains, which is tested by application to the experimental response of fiber-reinforced rubber materials. The experimental characterization is performed using a uniaxial testing device with optical measures of the deformation, using two different reinforcing materials on a ground rubber matrix. In ...

Modeling of soft composites under three-dimensional loading

The finite deformation response of fiber-reinforced hyperelastic solids under three-dimensional loading is studied through finite element simulations. The composites are modeled using representative volume elements with random fiber arrangement and periodic boundary conditions. Different matrices and volume fractions are considered. It is found that the shear stiffness of composites with Neo-Ho...

A fiber-reinforced Transversely Isotropic Constitutive Model for Liver Tissue

Biomechanical properties of soft tissue, such as liver, are important in modeling computer aided surgical procedures. Experimental evidences show that liver tissue is transversely isotropic. In this article, considering the liver tissue as an incompressible fiber-reinforced composite with one family of fibers, an exponential strain energy function (SEF) is proposed. The proposed SEF is based on...
