چکیده

We report the detection of broad (FWHM 270kms 1) H I 21 cm absorption toward the compact (<15h 1 pc) radio nucleus of the nearby powerful radio galaxy Cygnus A. The absorption corresponds to a column density of hydrogen atoms of at least 2.54 0.44 1019 Tspin cm 2. Observations of OH and H2CO yielded upper limits. While other possibilities exist, we argue that the observed H I absorption plausibly occurs within a circumnuclear obscuring torus which is thought to block our direct view of a quasar nucleus in this object. We have attempted to constrain the properties of the obscuring gas by combining our H I result with upper limits on molecular absorption and estimates of the total obscuring column density from X-ray observations. One possibility is that the majority of the gas is in a hot ( 8000K) mainly atomic phase; we derive limits on the size of such an atomic torus. Alternatively, the H I absorption might be due to atomic gas within a warm ( 1000K) mainly molecular torus. In this case the non-detection of molecular absorption can possibly be explained by radiative excitation due to the central radio source (Maloney, Begelman, & Rees 1994). Follow-up VLBI observations are planned which will further constrain the properties of the absorbing gas and distinguish between the competing models. The Ionization Fraction in the Obscuring ‘Torus’ of an Active Galactic Nucleus

The LINER galaxy NGC 2639 contains a water vapor megamaser, suggesting the presence of an edge-on nuclear accretion disk or torus. This galaxy is thus a good candidate for revealing absorption by the torus of any compact nuclear continuum emission. In this paper, we report VLBA radio maps at three frequencies and an ASCA X-ray spectrum obtained to search for free-free and photoelectric absorpti...

Direct evidence of the receding ‘torus’ around central nuclei of powerful radio sources

The presence of obscuring material (or a dusty ‘torus’) in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is central to the unification model for AGN. Two models, the multi-population model for radio sources and the receding torus model, are capable of describing observational properties of powerful radio galaxies and radio quasars. Here, I study the changes of the opening angle of the obscuring torus with radio...

Proper motion in Cygnus A

Our recent VLBI observations of the prominent FR II radio galaxy Cygnus A with the EVN and the VLBA reveal a pronounced two-sided jet structure. from which we could derive the kinematics of the jet and counter-jet. On the jet side and on mas scales, the jet seems to accelerate from βapp ≈ 0.1 − 0.2 (Krichbaum et al. 1998) at core-separations near 1 mas to βapp ≈ 0.4 − 0.6 at r ≥ 4 mas (H0 = 100...

New radiative transfer models for obscuring tori in active galaxies

Two-dimensional radiative transfer is employed to obtain the broad-band infrared spectrum of active galaxies. In the models we vary the geometry and size of the obscuring medium, the surface density, the opacity and the grain size distribution. Resulting spectral energy distributions are constructed for different orientations of the toroid. Colour-colour comparisons with observational data are ...
