چکیده

The t-channel contribution to the difference of electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon, (α−β)t, can be quantitatively understood in terms of a σ-meson pole in the complex t-plane of the invariant scattering amplitude A1(s, t) with properties of the σ meson as given by the quark-level Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model (NJL). Equivalently, this quantity may be understood in terms of a cut in the complex t-plane where the properties of the σ meson are taken from the ππ → σ → ππ, γγ → σ → ππ andNN̄ → σ → ππ reactions. This equivalence may be understood as a sum rule where the properties of the σ meson as predicted by the NJL model are related to the f0(600) particle observed in the three reactions. In the following we describe details of the derivation of (α− β) making use of predictions of the quark-level NJL model for the σ-meson mass. Polarizability of the Nucleon and Compton Scattering

One of the central challenges of hadron physics in the regime of strong (non-perturbative) QCD is to identify the relevant degrees of freedom of the nucleon and to quantitatively explain experimental data in terms of these degrees of freedom. Among the processes studied so far Compton scattering plays a prominent role because of the well understood properties of the electromagnetic interaction....

Magnetic moment and radius of the nucleon in a nonlocal model of meson-nucleon interaction

Magnetic moment and radius of the nucleon are calculated in a nonlocal extension of the chiral linear σ−model. Properties of the nonlocal model under the vector and axial transformations are considered. The conserved electromagnetic and vector currents, and partially conserved axial vector current are obtained. In the calculation of the nucleon electromagnetic vertex the π− and σ−loop diagrams ...

Electromagnetic polarizabilities and the excited states of the nucleon

The electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon are shown to be essentially composed of the nonresonant αp(E0+) = +3.2, αn(E0+) = +4.1, the t-channel α t p,n = −βt p,n = +7.6 and the resonant βp,n(P33(1232)) = +8.3 contributions (in units of 10 −4fm). The remaining deviations from the experimental data ∆αp = 1.2 ± 0.6, ∆βp = 1.2 ∓ 0.6, ∆αn = 0.8 ± 1.7 and ∆βn = 2.0 ∓ 1.8 are contributed by ...

Deuteron Compton Scattering and Electromagnetic Polarizabilities of the Nucleon *

Differential cross section of deuteron Compton scattering has been calculated using the Bonn NN-potential, a consistent set of meson-exchange currents and seagulls, and lowest-and higher-order electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon. Estimates of the polarizabilities of the neutron are obtained from recent experimental data. Photon scattering is a powerful tool for probing the structure...

Symmetries and Symmetry Breaking *

In understanding the world of matter the introduction of symmetry principles following experimentation or using the predictive power of symmetry principles to guide experimentation is most profound. The conservation of energy, linear momentum, angular momentum, charge, and CPT involve fundamental symmetries. All other conservation laws are valid within a restricted subspace of the four interact...
