چکیده
What type of computer is the human mind/brain? The answer we propose is this: the mind is a symbol manipulating computer, an abstract virtual machine realized in a brain performing connectionist computation. This characterizes the core of higher cognition, the particularly challenging and important realm of cognitive faculties operating in domains like abstract reasoning and language — faculties which are highly developed only in the human mind/brain. In this chapter, our proposed Integrated Connectionist/Symbolic (ICS) cognitive architecture is characterized in very general terms, after the basics of symbolic and connectionist computation are reviewed. The structure of the book is discussed in detail, and illustrative results from all other chapters are previewed.

متن کاملHarmony in Linguistic Cognition
In this article, I survey the integrated connectionist/symbolic (ICS) cognitive architecture in which higher cognition must be formally characterized on two levels of description. At the microlevel, parallel distributed processing (PDP) characterizes mental processing; this PDP system has special organization in virtue of which it can be characterized at the macrolevel as a kind of symbolic com...
متن کاملReview of Smolensky and Legendre, The Harmonic Mind∗
The Harmonic Mind is a two-volume collection of 23 chapters authored by Smolensky, Legendre and their collaborators. Some of these are reprints or slight updates of previously published material, but approximately 3/4 of it has never appeared before. Every phonologist who takes at all seriously the notion that phonology is a branch of cognitive science should own a copy of this book. Smolensky ...
