Determining Three-Dimensional Shape from Orientation and Spatial Frequency Disparities

چکیده
Binocular diierences in orientation and foreshortening are systematically related to surface slant and tilt and could potentially be exploited by biological and machine vision systems. Indeed, human stereopsis may possess a mechanism that speciically makes use of these orientation and spatial frequency disparities, in addition to the usual cue of horizontal disparity. In machine vision algorithms, orientation and spatial frequency disparities are a source of error in nding stereo correspondence because one seeks to nd features or areas which are similar in the two views when, in fact, they are systematically diierent. In other words, it is common to treat as noise what is useful signal. We have been developing a new stereo algorithm based on the outputs of linear spatial lters at a range of orientations and scales. We present a method in this framework, making use of orientation and spatial frequency disparities, to directly recover local surface slant. An implementation of this method has been tested on curved surfaces and quantitative experiments show that accurate surface orientation can be recovered eeciently. This method does not require the explicit identiication of oriented line elements and also provides an explanation of the intriguing perception of surface slant in the presence of orientation or spatial frequency disparities, but in the absence of systematic positional correspondence.

Planar surface orientation from texture spatial frequencies
-This paper presents a computational model and a practical algorithm for determining the three-dimensional orientation of a planar surface from visual texture information. The model consists of three parts: (1) a local spatial frequency based texture representation; (2) a model describing the projection of surface texture to image texture; and (3) a solution of the texture projection model for ...
متن کامل'Binaural echo disparity' as a potential indicator of object orientation and cue for object recognition in echolocating nectar-feeding bats.
Echolocating bats emit ultrasonic calls through their mouth or their nostrils and receive echoes from objects with both their ears. Information conveyed in the echoes is the basis for their three-dimensional acoustic perception of the surroundings. The direction of an object is encoded in binaural echo differences, i.e. on the one hand in the different arrival times of its echo at the two ears,...
متن کاملDisparity-based coding of three-dimensional surface orientation by macaque middle temporal neurons.
Gradients of binocular disparity across the visual field provide a potent cue to the three-dimensional (3-D) orientation of surfaces in a scene. Neurons selective for 3-D surface orientation defined by disparity gradients have recently been described in parietal cortex, but little is known about where and how this selectivity arises within the visual pathways. Because the middle temporal area (...
متن کاملRelationship between spatial-frequency and orientation tuning of striate-cortex cells.
If striate cells had the receptive-field (RF) shapes classically attributed to them, their preferred spatial frequencies would vary considerably with orientation. Other models of RF shape would predict a greater independence between orientation and spatial-frequency tuning. We have examined this by recording the responses of cat striate-cortex cells to a wide range of different spatial-frequenc...
متن کاملBinocular spatial phase tuning characteristics of neurons in the macaque striate cortex.
We employed microelectrode recording techniques to study the sensitivity of individual neurons in the striate cortex of anesthetized and paralyzed monkeys to relative interocular image disparities and to determine the effects of basic stimulus parameters on these cortical binocular interactions. The visual stimuli were drifting sine wave gratings. After the optimal stimulus orientation, spatial...
