چکیده

Isotope fractionations associated with high temperature evaporation provide important constraints on the physicochemical processes that affected planetary materials at the birth of the solar system. Previous evaporation experiments have focused on isotopic fractionation of moderately to highly volatile elements. Here, we investigate the isotope fractionation behavior of two highly refractory elements, calcium and titanium, during evaporation of perovskite (CaTiO3) in a vacuum furnace. In our experiments, isotope fractionation during evaporation follows the Rayleigh law, but not the commonly used exponential law, with the dominant evaporating species being Ca(g) and TiO2(g). If isotope fractionations in early solar system materials did follow the Rayleigh law, the common practice of using an exponential fractionation law to correct for mass-dependent fractionation in the study of mass-independent fractionations may introduce significant artificial isotope anomalies. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Si and Mg Isotope Fractionations in Melilite in Type B Cais

Introduction: Si and Mg isotopic compositions are indicators of evaporation processes experienced by CAIs [1]. Bulk Si and Mg isotopic compositions (up to ~5 permil/amu for Si and ~11 permil/amu for Mg) have been reported by [2]. Isotopic heterogeneity within CAIs is of interest because it may reveal how evaporation processes occurred. It may also reveal if secondary processes such as recondens...

PSRD: Zinc Isotopes Provide Clues to Volatile Loss During Moon Formation

Isotopic analyses of the oxygen and the refractory elements chromium, tungsten, and titanium show that Earth and Moon have the same isotopic compositions for these elements. In contrast, Randal Paniello and Frédéric Moynier (Washington University in St. Louis) and James Day (Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla) report from highprecision analyses of the isotopes of the volatile element...

Evaporation/condensation of Chondritic Chondrule Precursors in Nebular

Introduction: The origin of chondrules remains one of the great enigmas in meteoritics. Under the canonical formation conditions of low pressures, high temperatures and moderate cooling rates (10-1000 K/hr), some evaporation at least of the moderately volatile elements is expected. Chondrules are depleted in moderately volatile elements, but they do not have the systematic isotopic fractionatio...

Evaporative fractionation of zinc during the first nuclear detonation

Volatile element and compound abundances vary widely in planets and were set during the earliest stages of solar system evolution. Experiments or natural analogs approximating these early conditions are limited. Using silicate glass formed from arkosic sands during the first nuclear detonation at the Trinity test site, New Mexico, we show that the isotopes of zinc were fractionated during evapo...

Isotopic fractionation of the major elements of molten basalt by chemical and thermal diffusion

Samples produced in piston cylinder experiments were used to document the thermal isotopic fractionation of all the major elements of basalt except for aluminum and the fractionation of iron isotopes by chemical diffusion between a natural basalt and rhyolite. The thermal isotopic fractionations are summarized in terms of a parameter Xi defined as the fractionation in per mil per 100 C per atom...
