چکیده

We report observation of strong and anisotropic third-harmonic generation (THG) in monolayer and multilayer ReS2. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of monolayer ReS2, |χ (3)|, is on the order of 10−18 m2/V2, which is about one order of magnitude higher than reported results for hexagonal-lattice transition metal dichalcogenides such as MoS2. A similar magnitude for the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility was also obtained for a multilayer sample. The intensity of the THG field was found to be dependent on the direction of the incident light polarization for both monolayer and multilayer samples. A point group symmetry analysis shows that such anisotropy is not expected from a perfect 1T lattice and must arise from the distortions in the ReS2 lattice. Our results show that THG measurements can be used to characterize lattice distortions of two-dimensional materials and that lattice distortions are important for the nonlinear optical properties of such materials.

Layer-Tunable Third-Harmonic Generation in Multilayer Black Phosphorus

Black phosphorus has been the subject of growing interest due to its unique band structure that is both layer dependent and anisotropic. While many have studied the linear optical response of black phosphorus, the nonlinear response has remained relatively unexplored. Here we report on the observation of third-harmonic generation in black phosphorus using an ultrafast near-IR laser and measure ...

Integrated digital inverters based on two-dimensional anisotropic ReS2 field-effect transistors

Semiconducting two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides are emerging as top candidates for post-silicon electronics. While most of them exhibit isotropic behaviour, lowering the lattice symmetry could induce anisotropic properties, which are both scientifically interesting and potentially useful. Here we present atomically thin rhenium disulfide (ReS2) flakes with unique distorted 1T st...

Nonlinear Saturable and Polarization-induced Absorption of Rhenium Disulfide

Monolayer of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), with lamellar structure as that of graphene, has attracted significant attentions in optoelectronics and photonics. Here, we focus on the optical absorption response of a new member TMDs, rhenium disulphide (ReS2) whose monolayer and bulk forms have the nearly identical band structures. The nonlinear saturable and polarization-induced absorp...

Second Harmonic Generation Diagnostic of Layer by Layer Deposition from Disperse Red 1–Functionalized Maleic Anhydride Copolymer

Layer-by-layer (LBL) electrostatic assembly of poly-electrolytes is proving to be an increasingly rich and versatile technique for the formation of multilayered thin films with a wide range of electrical, magnetic, and optical properties. In the present work we synthesized a new nonlinear optical (NLO) maleic acid copolymer containing Disperse Red 1 moieties, built-up multilayer assemblies by a...

Disorder engineering and conductivity dome in ReS2 with electrolyte gating

Atomically thin rhenium disulphide (ReS2) is a member of the transition metal dichalcogenide family of materials. This two-dimensional semiconductor is characterized by weak interlayer coupling and a distorted 1T structure, which leads to anisotropy in electrical and optical properties. Here we report on the electrical transport study of mono- and multilayer ReS2 with polymer electrolyte gating...
