Genetically modified organisms: do the benefits outweigh the risks?
نویسنده
چکیده
UNLABELLED The objective of this literature review is to analyze the implications of using genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as well as international and European position regarding such organisms. METHOD Review of international and European legal requirements and ethical guidelines and relevant publications, found and accessed with the help of PubMed and Lund University Library databases. RESULTS The article discusses the main application areas of GMOs, the expansion of using GMOs in the world as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the implications of their usage. It further provides an overview of the suggested ways to tackle or avoid the GMO-related risks. The international and European positions regarding the application of GMOs are discussed and European Directives, Regulations, and ethical guidelines are overviewed. The article further presents the public attitudes towards GMOs in Europe as well as overviews surveys conducted at the national level. CONCLUSION Suggested steps to tackle the challenge of developing and managing biotechnology for the benefit of public health and the environment are presented.

متن کاملBeyond risk
Like any technology, agricultural biotechnologies that use genetically modified organisms (gMOs) have their opponents and supporters. For their proponents, the significant benefits of gMOs for humans, animals and the environment clearly outweigh any risks that are inherent with new technologies ( Jauhar, 2006; reis et al, 2006). For example, crops could be genetically engineered to grow more qu...
متن کاملThe ecological risks and benefits of genetically engineered plants.
Discussions of the environmental risks and benefits of adopting genetically engineered organisms are highly polarized between pro- and anti-biotechnology groups, but the current state of our knowledge is frequently overlooked in this debate. A review of existing scientific literature reveals that key experiments on both the environmental risks and benefits are lacking. The complexity of ecologi...
متن کاملAssessing environmental releases of genetically modified organisms: policy considerations of benefits and risks
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) hold enormous potential to improve human and environmental health, yet may also entail potential risks. GMO regulation in the European Union, as in most countries, occurs solely via a risk analysis, with no consideration given to benefits of the proposed technology, nor to the relative risks of competing technologies. Thus, decision-making is not contextual...
