Toward a Better Approach to Goodness: Comments on Van der Helm and Leeuwenberg (1996)

چکیده

Some resularities are more salient to the visual system than others. P. A. van der Helm and E. L. J. Leeuwenberg (1996) have proposed a new approach that quantifies the goodness of a pattern's regularity as the number of holographic identities constituting the regulartiy, relative to the total amount of information needed to describe the pattern. This holographic approach to goodness was compared with previous approaches and was presented in relation to metatheoretical issues. Tnese 3 aspects are discussed further here. First, the theory is shown to contain implausible assumptions and unfortunate gaps with respect to the required processing. Second, Van der Helm and Lseuwenberg's critique on preceding theories is refuted. Third, some metatheorerical issues need to be qualified or at least clarified. Together, these concerns suggest that a better approach to goodness might result from a synthesis of the most useful aspects of diverse theories of goodness.

Holography does not account for goodness: a critique of van der Helm and Leeuwenberg (1996).

P. A. van der Helm and E. L. J. Leeuwenberg (1996) outlined a holographic account of figural goodness of a perceptual stimulus. The theory is mathematically precise and can be applied to a broad spectrum of empirical data. The authors argue, however, that the account is inadequate on both theoretical and empirical grounds. The theoretical difficulties concern the internal consistency of the acc...

Goodness of visual regularities: a nontransformational approach.

Until recently, the transformational approach provided the only available formal analysis of visual regularities like repetition and mirror symmetry. This theoretical study presents a new analysis, based on the recently developed concept of holographic regularity. This concept applies to the intrinsic character of regularity and specifies the unique formal status of perceptually relevant regula...

The force of symmetry revisited: symmetry-to-noise ratios regulate (a)symmetry effects.

Freyd and Tversky's [Am. J. Psychol. 97 (1984) 109] data suggested that human observers tend to overestimate relatively high levels of symmetry (symmetry effect), and tend to underestimate relatively low levels of symmetry (asymmetry effect). However, on the basis of their holographic approach to visual regularity, van der Helm and Leeuwenberg [Psychol. Rev. 103(3) (1996) 429] predicted that, a...

Competing global and local completions in visual occlusion.

In visual occlusion 2 amodal-completion tendencies occur frequently. One tendency leads toward the simplest completed shape (a global completion) and the other to a shape for which the completion itself is as simple as possible (a local completion). Two experimental paradigms were used to test the strengths of these completion tendencies: a drawing task and a simultaneous matching task. The exp...

Natural selection of visual symmetries

Implicitly, Wynn’s (2002) target article starts from the transformational definition of symmetry. Unlike his suggestion, this traditional definition and the recent holographic definition are relevant to the discussion on the cognitive evolution of visual symmetries. These definitions reveal underlying properties and, thereby, they support the natural selection hypothesis. The holographic defini...
