چکیده

We study gender differences in altruism by examining a modiŽed dictator game with varying incomes and prices. Our results indicate that the question “which is the fair sex?” has a complicated answer—when altruism is expensive, women are kinder, but when it is cheap, men are more altruistic. That is, we Žnd that the male and female “demand curves for altruism” cross, and that men are more responsive to price changes. Furthermore, men are more likely to be either perfectly selŽsh or perfectly seless, whereas women tend to be “equalitarians” who prefer to share evenly.

Gender differences in altruism: Expectations, actual behaviour and accuracy of beliefs

Previous research shows that women are more altruist than men in dictator game experiments. Yet, little is known whether women are expected to be more altruist than men. Here we elicit third-parties’ beliefs about dictators’ donations conditional on knowing the gender of the dictator. Our data provide evidence of three main findings: (i) women are expected to be more altruist than men; (ii) bot...

Evidence supports social information and negotiation effects as participants change giving to...

Boys and girls are equally likely to choose to compete in word s...
