چکیده

We investigate a variation of the simple double pendulum in which the two point masses are replaced by square plates. The double square pendulum exhibits richer behavior than the simple double pendulum and provides a convenient demonstration of nonlinear dynamics and chaos. It is also an example of an asymmetric compound double pendulum, which has not been studied in detail. We obtain the equilibrium configurations and normal modes of oscillation and derive the equations of motion, which are solved numerically to produce Poincaré sections. We show how the behavior varies from regular motion at low energies, to chaos at intermediate energies, and back to regular motion at high energies. We also show that the onset of chaos occurs at a significantly lower energy than for the simple double pendulum. © 2009 American Association of Physics Teachers. #DOI: 10.1119/1.3052072$

Dynamics and Regulation of Locomotion of a Human Swing Leg as a Double-Pendulum Considering Self-Impact Joint Constraint

Background:Despite some successful dynamic simulation of self-impact double pendulum (SIDP)-as humanoid robots legs or arms- studies, there is limited information available about the control of one leg locomotion. Objective :The main goal of this research is to improve the reliability of the mammalians leg locomotion and building more elaborated models close to the natural movements, by modelin...

Numerical Analysis of the Dynamics of Single and Double Spring-Pendulum Systems

In our investigation, we used Hamiltonian dynamics to model two different spring-pendulum systems in MATLAB. First, we confirmed that chaotic motion is possible in the classic single spring-pendulum system in two dimensions and without damping. Next, we modified the system by attaching the mass to two springs (Figure 1b) and tested to see how the dynamics change with the addition of this second...

Nonlinear Dynamics of the 3D Pendulum

A 3D pendulum consists of a rigid body, supported at a fixed pivot, with three rotational degrees of freedom. The pendulum is acted on by a gravitational force. Symmetry assumptions are shown to lead to the planar 1D pendulum and to the spherical 2D pendulum models as special cases. The case where the rigid body is asymmetric and the center of mass is distinct from the pivot location leads to t...

Equations of Motion for a Translating Compound Pendulum

In this note we will derive the equations of motion for a compound pendulum being driven by external motion at the center of rotation. A compound pendulum is a pendulum consisting of a single rigid body rotating around a fixed axis. In contrast to the simple pendulum we studied in class, a compound pendulum can have an arbitrary distribution of mass, which means that it better models real-world...

Humanoid Walking Robot: Modeling, Inverse Dynamics, and Gain Scheduling Control

This article presents an overview of bipedal walking models by grouping them into two categories: models with concentrated mass and models with distributed mass. As an example of the models with concentrated mass, a mass-spring inverted pendulum model is presented, accompanied by an analysis. As an example of a more complex distributed mass model, a 10-dof walking robot model is developed and a...
