چکیده

E cient allocation of communication channels is critical for the performance of wireless mobile computing systems. The centralized channel allocation algorithms proposed in literature are neither robust, nor scalable. Distributed channel allocation schemes proposed in the past are complicated and require active participation of the mobile nodes. These algorithms are unable to dynamically adjust to spatial and temporal uctuations in channel demand (load). We present a distributed dynamic channel allocation algorithm in which heavily loaded regions are assigned a large number of communication channels, while their lightly loaded neighbors are assigned fewer channels. As the spatial distribution of channel demand changes with time, the spatial distribution of allocated channels adjusts accordingly. The algorithm described in this paper requires minimal involvement of the mobile nodes, thus conserving their limited energy supply. The algorithm is proved to be deadlock free, starvation free and fair. It prevents co-channel interference and can tolerate the failure of mobile as well as static nodes without any signi cant degradation in service. The algorithm is scalable and imposes low computation and communication overheads, as demonstrated by simulation experiments.

A Fault-Tolerant Dynamic Channel Allocation Scheme for Enhancing QoS in Cellular Networks

In cellular networks, it is vital to allocate communication channels efficiently because the bandwidth allocated for cellular communication is limited. When mobile hosts move from one cell to another cell, to provide uninterrupted service, the new cell should have enough channels to support the ongoing communication of the mobile hosts that moved into the cell. If channels are statically alloca...

A New Quorum System For Fault-Tolerant Channel Allocation In Cellular Wireless Networks

The efficient use of the bandwidth allocated for a cellular wireless network is crucial for the satisfactory performance of the system. In order to increase the channel utilization, the channels are allocated to different cells in a dynamic way. The dynamic channel schemes can be categorized in to centralized and distributed. However, the centralized schemes are neither reliable nor scalable. T...

Distributed Fault-Tolerant Channel Allocation for Mobile Cellular Networks

Distributed channel allocation algorithms have received considerable attention due to their high reliability and scalability. However, in these algorithms, a borrower needs to consult with its interference neighbors in order to borrow a channel. Thus, a borrower fails to borrow channels when it cannot communicate with anyone of its interference neighbors. In real-life networks, under heavy traf...
