Canonical Constituents and Non-canonical Coordination - Simple Categorial Grammar Account
نویسنده
چکیده
A variation of the standard non-associative Lambek calculus with the slightly non-standard yet very traditional semantic interpretation turns out to straightforwardly and uniformly express the instances of non-canonical coordination while maintaining phrase structure constituents. Non-canonical coordination looks just as canonical on our analyses. Gapping, typically problematic in Categorial Grammar–based approaches, is analyzed like the ordinary object coordination. Furthermore, the calculus uniformly treats quantification in any position, quantification ambiguity and islands. It lets us give what seems to be the simplest account for both narrowand wide-scope quantification into coordinated phrases and of narrowand wide-scope modal auxiliaries in gapping. The calculus lets us express standard covert movements and anaphoriclike references (analogues of overt movements) in types – as well as describe how the context can block these movements.

Coordinate Ellipsis and Apparent Non-Constituent Coordination
Within the tradition of Categorial Grammar, so-called ‘non-constituent’ coordination (‘argument cluster’ coordination and ‘right node raising’) has been analyzed in terms of the coordination of nonstandard constituents produced by the operations of type raising and composition. This highly successful research has expanded the domain of data that modern analyses of coordination must take into ac...
متن کاملCoordination in Hybrid Type-logical Categorial Grammar
We formulate explicit analyses of certain non-standard coordination examples discussed in Levine (2011) in a variant of categorial grammar called Hybrid Type-Logical Categorial Grammar (Kubota 2010; Kubota & Levine 2012; Kubota to appear). These examples are of theoretical importance since they pose significant challenges to the currently most explicit and most comprehensive analysis of coordin...
متن کاملStatistical Parsing for CCG with Simple Generative Models
This paper presents a statistical parser for a wide-coverage Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG) derived from the Penn Treebank. The Treebank is translated to a corpus of canonical CCG derivations. We de ne a generative statistical model over CCG derivations and train it on the transformed Treebank. This model is evaluated using Parseval measures and the accuracy of recovery of word-word depen...
متن کاملEfficient Processing Of Flexible Categorial Grammar
From a processing point of view, however, flexible categorial systems are problematic, since they introduce spurious ambiguity. In this paper, we present a flexible categorial grammar which makes extensive use of the p roduc t -ope ra to r , f i rs t in t roduced by Lambek (1958). The grammar has the property that for every reading of a sentence, a strictly left-branching derivation can be give...
متن کاملA Memory-Based Approach to the Treatment of Serial Verb Construction in Combinatory Categorial Grammar
CCG, one of the most prominent grammar frameworks, efficiently deals with deletion under coordination in natural languages. However, when we expand our attention to more analytic languages whose degree of pro-dropping is more free, CCG’s decomposition rule for dealing with gapping becomes incapable of parsing some patterns of intra-sentential ellipses in serial verb construction. Moreover, the ...
