Juvenile thyrotoxicosis treated with thiouracil.

چکیده
Prepubertal thyrotoxicosis is a condition of some rarity and comparatively few childhood cases have so far been recorded in the literature where the drug thiouracil has been used in treatment. A review of six cases so treated was published by Williams and Janney (1947). The present case provides a suitable example both of the clinical picture and the response to treatment. Atkinson (1938) in a survey of world literature coUected two hundred and eight cases of Graves's disease in children from the years 1851 to 1938. Of these, only 20 per cent. occurred in the age period six to nine years. The registers of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital for Sick Chiklden record only two previous undoubted cases snce 1925 of a total of over seventeen thousand children admitted to the medical and surgical wards.

A review of the available literature to date shows 1914 casest of thyrotoxicosis in which thiouracil was employed. This does not include the use of thiourea or other related compounds nor the use of thiouracil in any condition but thyrotoxicosis. Forty-four cases (1.3 per cent) had resulting agranulocytosis, and of these, i per cent) died because of the agranulocytosis. Ninety-three patients pe...

Introduction Since the introduction of thiouracil in 1943 antithyroid treatment for thyrotoxicosis has increased widely and has proved safer and more effective in carefully selected cases as the years have passed. Since 1951 carbimazole has been highly favoured in this country, being considered the least toxic agent in large-scale surveys (Burrell, Fraser & Doniach, 1956). Later (Willcox, 1962)...

On two previous occasions, in 19301 and in 1941,2 I have had the honour of reading papers before the Bristol Medico-Chirurgical Society on the surgery of thyrotoxicosis. By that time, operation had become the routine treatment, except in quite mild or very severe cases, and a certain number of children or young women with primary thyrotoxicosis. In 1943, however, thiouracil was introduced by As...
