Equilibria for inversions induced by x-rays in isogenic strains of Drosophila pseudoobscura.

چکیده
ATURAL populations of many species of Drosophila show chromosomal N p o l ymorphisms, maintained presumably by superior fitness of the heterokaryotypes. Because inversions suppress the recombination in structurally heterozygous chromosomes, they may keep together the coadapted gene complexes inside, and in the vicinity of the inverted sections. This view is supported by the €act that in experimental populations frequency equilibria are regularly established between gene arrangements of similar geographic origin, but not between the same gene arrangements if the chromosomes are derived from geographically different populations (DOBZHANSKY 1948; DOBZHANSKY and PAVLOVSKY 1953). On the other hand, the inversions may produce position effects. The breakage points in naturally occurring inversions are not randomly distributed over the chromosomes, and clustering and coincidence of the breakage points in different inversions is not uncommon ( BERNSTEIN and GOLDSCHMIDT 1961 ; KUNZE-MUHL and SPERLICH 1955). A case is known in Drosophila subobscura in which spontaneous and a X-ray induced inversion shared one of their breakage points ( SPERLICH 1959). If an inversion has no selective advantage when it appears, its chances of spreading and becoming established in a population are very small. A favorable position effect could, however, maintain a new gene arrangement, and permit it to accumulate a gene complex coadapted with other gene arrangements in the same populations. The experiments described in this report were made in the hope that they may throw light on the problem of the dynamics of inversion polymorphisms in Drosophila populations.

Activity variants of acid phosphatase-3 among chromosome 3 inversions of Drosophila pseudoobscura.
Allozymes of the Ap-3 locus in Drosophila pseudoobscura show very strong associations with chromosome 3 inversions. The 0.98 electrophoretic allele is associated with The TL, SC, CH and PP gene arrangements, while the 1.00 electrophoretic allele is characteristic of the AR and ST gene arrangements. Variation in relative 0.98 and 1.00 AP-3 allozyme activities of chromosome 3 isogenic strains was...
متن کاملEvolutionary genomics of inversions in Drosophila pseudoobscura: evidence for epistasis.
Drosophila pseudoobscura harbors a rich polymorphism for paracentric inversions on the third chromosome, and the clines in the inversion frequencies across the southwestern United States indicate that strong natural selection operates on them. Isogenic inversion strains were made from isofemale lines collected from four localities, and eight molecular markers were mapped on the third chromosome...
متن کاملDistinctions among allelic variants associated with chromosome 3 inversions in Drosophila pseudoobscura and Drosophila persimilis.
Efforts were made to discriminate new genetic variants among electrophoretic alleles that are associated with chromosome 3 inversions of Drosophila pseudoobscura and D. persimilis. Apparent genetic similarities for electrophoretic alleles between these two species and among the common inversions they carry were reexamined by altering gel concentration and buffer pH. At the amylase locus, the 1....
متن کاملMolecular population genetics of X-linked genes in Drosophila pseudoobscura.
This article presents a nucleotide sequence analysis of 500 bp determined in each of five X-linked genes, runt, sisterlessA, period, esterase 5, and Heat-shock protein 83, in 40 Drosophila pseudoobscura strains collected from two populations. Estimates of the neutral migration parameter for the five loci show that gene flow among D. pseudoobscura populations is sufficient to homogenize inversio...
متن کاملSelection in heterogeneous environments maintains the gene arrangement polymorphism of Drosophila pseudoobscura.
Chromosomal rearrangements may play an important role in how populations adapt to a local environment. The gene arrangement polymorphism on the third chromosome of Drosophila pseudoobscura is a model system to help determine the role that inversions play in the evolution of this species. The gene arrangements are the likely target of strong selection because they form classical clines across di...
