چکیده
Recent research on perceptual grouping is described with particular emphasis on identifying the level(s) at which grouping factors operate. Contrary to the classical view of grouping as an early, two-dimensional, image-based process, recent experimental results show that it is strongly influenced by phenomena related to perceptual constancy, such as binocular depth perception, lightness constancy, amodal completion, and illusory contours. These findings imply that at least some grouping processes operate at the level of phenomenal perception rather than at the level of the retinal image. Preliminary evidence is reported showing that grouping can affect perceptual constancy, suggesting that grouping processes must also operate at an early, preconstancy level. If so, grouping may be a ubiquitous, ongoing aspect of visual organization that occurs for each level of representation rather than as a single stage that can be definitively localized relative to other perceptual processes. 2003 Elsevier B.V. متن کاملCommon Belief with the Logic of Individual Belief
The logic of common belief does not always re‡ect that of individual beliefs. In particular, even when the individual belief operators satisfy the KD45 logic, the common belief operator may fail to satisfy axiom 5. That is, it can happen that neither is A commonly believed nor is it common belief that A is not commonly believed. We identify the intersubjective restrictions on individual beliefs...
متن کاملModel Theory of Tannakian Categories
We are interested in the following situation: T1 is a theory expanding a theory T by additional sorts. There is a sort X of T1 such that for any sort Q of T1 there is a sort CQ of T , and a map fQ : Q × X → CQ, such that each fibre fQx is injective. In this situation, T1 is said to be internal to T (the usual notion of internality is slightly more general than this, but for our purposes this is...
متن کاملComparison , Grouping , and Preference
How does the attractiveness of a particular option depend on comparisons drawn between it and other alternatives? We observe that in many cases, comparisons hurt: When the options being compared have both meaningful advantages and meaningful disadvantages, comparison between options makes each option less attractive. The effects of comparison are crucial in choice problems involving grouped opt...
متن کاملDoes flexibility in perceptual organization compete with automatic grouping?
Segregated objects can be sought simultaneously, i.e., mentally "re-grouped." Although the mechanisms underlying such "re-grouping" clearly differ from automatic grouping, it is unclear whether or not the end products of "re-grouping" and automatic grouping are the same. If they are, they would have similar impact on visual organization but would be in conflict. We compared the consequences of ...
