Integration of subsystems models as a tool toward describing feeding interactions and fisheries impacts in a large marine ecosystem, the Gulf of Mexico

چکیده
This contribution documents, using the example of the Gulf of Mexico large marine ecosystem (GoM) LME, how mass-balance, trophic (‘Ecopath’) models can be synthesized into a single integrated, spatially explicit model, from which various inferences on the ecological functioning of, and fisheries impacts on an LME can be drawn. The 10 component models used here covered inshore subsystems (lagoon, coral reefs), shelves, the open waters of the GoM, both in Mexican and US waters, and the GoMs Central Gyre, and were integrated using the Ecopath with Ecosim software. The main features of the synthetic trophic model resulting from this integration are presented, along with several time dynamic (Ecosim) and spatial simulations (Ecospace). Jointly, their results suggest the GoM to be rather robust as a whole, although continued increases in fishing effort, especially by bottom (shrimp) trawlers, will have serious impacts, reverberating through the entire shelf subsystem. r 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd. see front matter r 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd. .ocecoaman.2004.12.009 nding author. Potential Impact of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill on Commercial Fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico
Given the economic and social importance of fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico large marine ecosystem (LME), it is imperative to quantify the potential impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. To provide a preliminary perspective of the consequences of this disaster, spatial databases of annual reported commercial catch and landed value prior to the spill were investigated relative to the locat...
متن کاملThe impacts of anthropogenic sound on marine mammals in the Persian Gulf; current status and need for future research
Abstract Sound generating human activities so-called “anthropogenic sound” have increased ambient sound levels considerably in aquatic habitats that are markedly diverse in time and space. Sound generating human activities is now recognized as a potential driver of environmental changes in marine habitats. Iran has 750 km coastline along the Caspian Sea located in the north and around 2250 km ...
متن کاملErythromycin residues concentration in urban wastewater discharged into the Persian Gulf marine environment (a case study: Bandar Abbas city)
Background and Objective: As pharmaceutically active compounds (particularly antibiotics) are known emerging contaminants (EC), their occurrence in the environment has high health risks for the living organisms and the public. The effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is the most important source of residues of these compounds in the environment. The urban wastewater of Bandar Abbas i...
متن کاملDiscriminating mesozooplankton communities in Bushehr marine coastal ecosystems- Persian Gulf
Coastal ecosystems of Bushehr are shallow environments subject to human impacts, including shrimp aquaculture and urban expansion activities. A spatial-temporal study was conducted in order to assess the actual ecological status of the creeks, estuary and marine sites on the basis of their taxonomic composition and density of mesozooplankton. Zooplankton species distribution and abundance data ...
متن کاملAn Overview of Increasing Incidents of Bottlenose Dolphin Harassment in the Gulf of Mexico and Possible Solutions
The panhandle region of the Gulf of Mexico is known by scientists, regulatory agencies and conservation organizations as a “hotbed” area of dolphin harassment. Interactions between humans and wild dolphins routinely occur through close vessel approaches or through direct contact associated with commercial or recreational fisheries, swimwith, or feeding activities. Such interactions are of serio...
