چکیده
Aim: This study was done to evaluate polymerase chain reaction( PCR) and BACTEC culture in diagnosis of female genital tuberculosis. The findings of these diagnostic modalities were compared with that of direct microscopy and culture on Lowenstein-Jensen( LJ) medium and also with that of laparoscopy. Methods: Thirty clinically suspected cases of female genital tuberculosis were included in this study. Laparoscopy was done in each of the patient. Endometrial biopsy ( EB) was collected in each patient and sent to Microbiology and Pathology laboratory. Direct microscopy, culture on LJ medium and BACTEC were done for tuberculosis. PCR was done using two primers MPB64 and HupB for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Histopathology was done in each sample to look out for granuloma and other features of chronic inflammation. Results:7(23.3%) samples were positive by PCR using MPB64 and Hup B primers. Positivity in other diagnostic modalities were 1 ( 3.3%), 2( 6.7%) and 4( 13.3%) for direct microscopy, culture on LJ medium and BACTEC medium respectively. None of the samples were positive on either LJ medium or BACTEC culture and negative by PCR. 3 out of 3 cases (100%) showing suggestive findings of tuberculosis in laparoscopy were positive by PCR. 5 out of 5 cases (100%) showing granuloma in histopathology were positive by PCR. Conclusions: Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) showed higher sensitivity and specificity than conventional techniques and showed good correlation with laparoscopic findings in diagnosis of female genital tuberculosis.

Evaluating PCR, culture & histopathology in the diagnosis of female genital tuberculosis
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Genital tuberculosis (GTB) is one of the major causes for severe tubal disease leading to infertility. Unlike pulmonary tuberculosis, the clinical diagnosis of GTB is difficult because in majority of cases the disease is either asymptomatic or has varied clinical presentation. Routine laboratory values are of little value in the diagnosis. An absolute diagnosis cannot be...
متن کاملUse of Endo-Ovarian Tissue Biopsy and Pelvic Aspirated Fluid for the Diagnosis of Female Genital Tuberculosis by Conventional versus Molecular Methods
BACKGROUND Til date, none of the diagnostic techniques available for the detection of female genital tuberculosis (FGTB) are 100% accurate. We therefore, proposed to use the endometrial tissue biopsies (ETBs), ovarian tissue biopsies (OTBs) and pelvic aspirated fluids (PAFs) for the diagnosis of FGTB among infertile women by conventional versus molecular methods. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING...

Background: Tuberculosis of the genital tract is one of the major causes of gynecological morbidity. Genital TB affects about 12% of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and represents 15-20% of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Genital TB may be asymptomatic but involves genital organs such as fallopian tubes, endometrium, ovaries, cervix, vulva/ vagina and myometrium. The major presenting symptom ...

BACKGROUND Genital tuberculosis (TB) is an important cause of infertility in the developing countries, where hysterosalpingography (HSG) remains an initial diagnostic procedure in the evaluation of tubal and peritoneal factors leading to infertility. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the HSG findings of genital TB in infertile women. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively r...

OBJECTIVE Tuberculosis remains a global health problem and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Female genital tuberculosis is rare in the western world, but relevant in developing countries like India. The aim of this study was to determine histologic findings of different parts of the female genital tract affected by tuberculosis and to correlate it with other features. MATERIA...
