چکیده
A 45-year-old man with unremarkable past medical history presented with decreased vision following cataract surgery and piggy back intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in the right and left eyes, 5 and 3 weeks before respectively (Fig. 1). Calculated IOL power had been 50 D and 52 D in his right and left eyes respectively. Best corrected visual acuity was 20/200 in the right eye and 20/800 in the left one with 2+ relative afferent pupillary defect on the left side. Horizontal corneal diameter was 11.0 mm in both eyes. Keratometry was 50 D×15° and 45 D×105° in the right, and 51 D×135° and 50 D×45° in the left eye. Fundoscopic examination disclosed vascular tortuosity and choroidal effusion in both eyes together with exudative retinal detachment (ERD) in the left eye (Fig. 2). Echography revealed abnormal scleral thickening and choroidal effusion. Axial length was 14.2 mm and 14 mm in the right and left eyes respectively as determined by A-scan biometry. A diagnosis of nanophthalmos was entertained based on the above-mentioned findings. Choroidal effusion and ERD were assumed to be complications following cataract surgery. DISCuSSION

Novel TMEM98 mutations in pedigrees with autosomal dominant nanophthalmos
PURPOSE Autosomal dominant nanophthalmos is an inherited eye disorder characterized by a structurally normal but smaller eye. Patients with nanophthalmos have high hyperopia (far-sightedness), a greater incidence of angle-closure glaucoma, and increased risk of surgical complications. In this study, the clinical features and the genetic basis of nanophthalmos were investigated in two large auto...
متن کاملSpectrum of Angle Closure, Uveal Effusion Syndrome, and Nanophthalmos
Nanophthalmos, uveal effusion syndrome, and acute angle closure glaucoma (ACG) can present as a continuum in a patient, as is described here. This patient's angle closure was thought to be caused by idiopathic uveal effusion syndrome, and while there are no generally accepted diagnosis criteria for nanophthalmos, our patient fulfilled the criteria as defined by Wu.10 To prevent development of f...
متن کاملThe treatment of malignant glaucoma in nanophthalmos: a case report
BACKGROUND The management of eyes with nanophthalmos is a dilemma for ophthalmologists due to various complications, especial the eye with malignant glaucoma. We report a case of effective treatment for malignant glaucoma in nanophthalmos. CASE PRESENTATION An 82-year-old man was performed phacoemulsification in the right eye with normal ocular pressure and nanophthalmos. The surgery was unev...
متن کاملMutations in a novel serine protease PRSS56 in families with nanophthalmos
PURPOSE Nanophthalmos is a rare genetic ocular disorder in which the eyes of affected individuals are abnormally small. Patients suffer from severe hyperopia as a result of their markedly reduced axial lengths, but otherwise are capable of seeing well unlike other more general forms of microphthalmia. To date one gene for nanophthalmos has been identified, encoding the membrane-type frizzled re...
متن کاملSmall eyes big problems: is cataract surgery the best option for the nanophthalmic eyes?
Nanophthalmos refers to an eyeball of short axial length, usually less than 20 mm which leads to angle closure glaucoma due to relatively large lens. Intra-ocular lens extraction relieves the angle closure in nanophthalmos. Cataract surgery in a nanophthalmic eye is technically difficult with high risk of complications such as posterior capsular rupture, uveal effusion, choroidal haemorrhage, v...

Aim. To report the optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings in three members of the same family with nanophthalmos associated with elevated papillomacular retinal fold. Methods. Complete ophthalmic examination as well as ultrasonography and OCT was performed in all patients. Results. Axial lengths ranged from 16.75 mm to 17.48 mm and refractive errors ranged from +17.50 D to +20.50 D. Main f...
