Building a Credible Carbon Offsets
نویسنده
چکیده
Bradford Gentry opened the workshop by addressing the variability in prices that Yale encountered when it was shopping for renewable energy credits (RECs). What does it mean if one REC is priced at $38 per ton of CO2 equivalent while another one goes for $10/ton of CO2 equivalent, for example? Gentry suggested that the wide variety of green technologies available may account for this disparity, which begs the question of which ones are the best investments, the most effective or the most credible. He also underscored the importance of selecting RECs that address the goals of a particular institution in offsetting its carbon emissions.

Potential for Energy-from-waste Carbon Offsets in North America
A carbon offset program is likely to be part of any future federal cap-and-trade program and is included in both the U.S. House of Representatives passed American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 and the Kerry-Boxer Senate draft greenhouse gas legislation. Internationally, Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facilities in emerging economies are eligible for carbon offset credits under the Clean Develo...
متن کاملExploring Us Consumers Understanding of Carbon Offsets
This study found the relationship between general environment knowledge and carbon offsets knowledge is inversely related and no significant differences in general environment or carbon offset behavior exists between levels of knowledge. The findings lend support that consumers may misunderstand 'carbon offset' claims thus public policy intervention is required.
متن کاملCarbon offsetting: sustaining consumption?
In this paper we examine how theories of sustainable and ethical consumption help us to understand a new, rapidly expanding type of consumer product designed to mitigate climate change: carbon offsets. The voluntary carbon offset market grew by 200% between 2005 and 2006, and there are now over one hundred and fifty retailers of voluntary carbon offsets worldwide. Our analysis concentrates on t...
متن کاملInfluences of Permanence on the Comparative Value of Biological Sequestration versus Emissions Offsets
We use a net present value framework to examine the impact of non-permanence on the economics of land-based biological carbon sequestration. Contingent on assumptions about discount rates, management, and carbon prices trajectories, and payment contract design, we find the adjusted value of carbon sequestration relative to permanently available emission offsets to be between 38 and 55 percent f...
متن کاملCapitalizing Green Pavement: A Method and Valuation
The use of recycling techniques in pavement construction offers significant benefits of resource conservation and emission reduction. While the environmental benefits are generally considered as business expenses, a new trend is to turn sustainable construction into profit. By generating financial revenue via carbon trading mechanism, asphalt producers and road builders can compensate their sus...
