چکیده

In the context of stimulating data owners to make data ‘FAIR’ (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), we have developed the concept of the ‘Bring Your Own Data workshop’ (BYOD) for FAIR data. In a BYOD that focuses particularly on a Linked Data (LD) approach, engineers or bioinformaticians who are experts on their own data sources work with LD experts to generate Linked Data on a preselected set of data from their own resource. We report here on the organisation of a BYOD and on our experience from two BYODs, one that was held June 24-25, 2014 in Leiden, the Netherlands, and one that will be held in Rome, Italy, on November 26-27, 20141, following the EpiRare workshop2.

Registries of Domain-Relevant Semantic Reference Models Help Bootstrap Interoperability in Domains with Fragmented Data Resources

The specialist field of rare diseases must connect its vast array of globally distributed disease and patient registries to maximise their value. Unfortunately, many registries are “boutique”, with few or no staff with formal informatics training. At a series of Bring Your Own Data workshops, we helped registry owners transform their data into formally structured triple stores following the Lin...

Your data is your dogfood: DevOps in the astronomical observatory

DevOps is the contemporary term for a software development culture that purposefully blurs distinction between software development and IT operations by treating “infrastructure as code.” DevOps teams typically implement practices summarised by the colloquial directive to “eat your own dogfood;” meaning that software tools developed by a team should be used internally rather thrown over the fen...
