Pediatric mechanical ventilation in India. Need, indications, cost and problems.

چکیده
We are undertaking mechanical ventilation (MV) seriously since three years, begining with infants and children and then including neonates also. MV is provided to about 15 cases every month presently, 1 to 3 cases receiving it at a time. MV typically lasts for a few days, longest duration having been 37 days. Overall survival of 30% in 1992 is steadily improving. The following presentation of our experiences at Choithram Hospital and Research Centre, Indore is partly based on a prospective study(l).

متن کاملContinuous positive airway pressure-a gentler approach to ventilation.
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) has become a useful modality in management of respiratory distress, especially in preterm babies. Main indications for use of CPAP are respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and apnea of prematurity. It decreases the need of invasive and costly mechanical ventilation. This review details the physiological effects of CPAP, its methods of delivery, and its ...

متن کاملInvasive and noninvasive pediatric mechanical ventilation.
Both invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation techniques are inherent to the care of most patients admitted to intensive care units. Despite the everyday use of mechanical ventilation for thousands of patients and the availability of thousands of reports in the medical literature, there are no clear and consistent guidelines for the use of mechanical ventilation for pediatric patients.
