چکیده

Introduction Reduction of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) surface wear in total knee replacement (TKR) bearings may delay the onset of osteolysis and subsequent loosening of components. Crosslinking has been shown to increase the wear resistance of UHMWPE bearings in multidirectional total hip replacement applications when articulating against smooth counterfaces [1]. The aim of this study was to compare the wear of crosslinked UHMWPE bearings with a standard UHMWPE material in a moderate constraint fixed bearing TKR using a physiological knee simulator.

PEEK and CFR-PEEK as alternative bearing materials to UHMWPE in a fixed bearing total knee replacement: An experimental wear study

New bearing materials for total joint replacement have been explored as the need to improve longevity and enhance performance is driven by the changing demands of the patient demographic. Carbon-reinforced PEEK has demonstrated good wear characteristics in experimental wear simulation in both simple geometry pin-on-plate studies and in total hip joint replacement. Carbon reinforced PEEK CFR-PEE...

Effect of Polyethylene Crosslinking and Bearing Design on Wear of Unicompartmental Arthroplasty.

Wear and polyethylene damage continue to be important factors affecting outcomes of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. We compared two design rationales for unicompartmental arthroplasty: fully congruent mobile bearings; or moderately conforming fixed bearings using experimental and computational wear simulation. Experimental wear rates were 3.89 (±0.12) mg/million cycles for the highly crossl...

Reduction of Total Knee Replacement Wear with Vitamin E doped highly cross linked UHMWPE

Introduction: Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a common bearing component in Total Knee Replacement (TKR) implants, and its susceptibility to wear continues to be the long-term limiting factor in the life of these implants. Novel material modifications have been introduced to reduce UHMWPE wear rates and thus improve the life of TKRs. Radiation and crosslinking of UHMWPE hav...

Wear Reduction in Total Ankle Arthroplasty Using Highly Crosslinked UHMWPE

Introduction: Bearing couples within total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) typically utilize cobalt chromium alloys articulating on ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Articulation of these surfaces during in vivo loading can generate UHMWPE wear particles, which may then result in osteolysis and component loosening [1]. Osteolysis has been observed following TAA in 15-22% of patient pop...
