چکیده

USDA Forest Service Res. Note PSW-RN-414-WEB. 1993. E xperienced hydrologists and geomorphologists can estimate the relative mobility of a streambed by looking at indicators of bedload transport, such as the freshness of bed-surface material. Another such indicator is the amount of fine sediment in pools. Pools in gravelbed streams commonly contain deposits of fine sediment (mostly sand and gravel) that overlie a coarser substrate of coarse gravel, cobbles, or boulders. In such channels, the fraction of pool volume filled with fine sediment can be used as an index of the supply of mobile sediment. This fraction (V*) is the ratio of fine-sediment volume to pool water volume plus fine-sediment volume. In a previous paper, we investigated the relationship of V*w, the weighted mean value of V* for a reach, to qualitative evaluations of sediment yield in eight tributary basins of the Trinity River in northwestern California.1 This study suggested that V*w could be used to evaluate sediment supply in gravel-bed channels without directly measuring sediment transport or sediment delivery from hillslopes. In one channel, V* increased abruptly downstream of a sediment source, suggesting that V* could be used to identify significant sediment sources. We are conducting ongoing research on the relationship between V*w, sediment supply, and basin characteristics and are attempting to link V* to habitat suitability for aquatic organisms. If this is successful, V* could be used to simultaneously evaluate sediment supply and its effects on aquatic ecosystems. These relationships could then provide a needed link between watershed condition and fish habitat. This paper describes a method to measure V* and discusses factors affecting the accuracy of estimates of V* and V*w.

During waning flood flows in gravel-bed streams, finegrained bedload sediment (sand and fine gravel) is commonly winnowed from zones of high shear stress, such as riffles, and deposited in pools, where it mantles an underlying coarse layer. As sediment load increases, more fine sediment becomes available to fill pools. The volume of fine sediment in pools can be measured by probing with a metal...

Fine bed material in pools of natural gravel bed channels

Natural gravel bed channels commonly contain a fine mode of sand and fine gravel that fills voids of the bed framework of coarser gravel. If the supply of fine bed material exceeds the storage capacity of framework voids, excess fine material forms surficial patches, which can be voluminous in pools during low flow. Data collected in 34 natural channels in northern California and southern Orego...

Numerical study of a combined convection flow in a cavity filled with nanofluid considering effects of diameter of nanoparticles and cavity inclination angles

The present paper focuses on problem of mixed convection fluid flow and heat transfer of Al2O3-water nanofluid with temperature and nanoparticles concentration dependent thermal conductivity and effective viscosity inside Lid-driven cavity having a hot rectangular obstacle. The governing equations are discretized using the finite volume method while the SIMPLER algorithm is employed to couple v...

Numerical Investigation of Magnetic Field Effects on Mixed Convection Flow in a Nanofluid-filled Lid-driven Cavity

In this work, the stencil adaptive method is applied to investigate the effects of a magnetic field on mixed convection of Al2O3-water nanofluid in a square lid-driven cavity. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by an adaptive mesh method which has superior numerical advantages compared to the traditional method on the uniform fine grid. The main objective of this study is to ...

Numerical Study of Natural Convection in an Inclined Cavity with Partially Active Side Walls Filled with Cu-water Nanofluid

The buoyancy-driven fluid flow and heat transfer in a square cavity with partially active side walls filled with Cu-water nanofluid is investigated numerically. The active parts of the left and the right side-walls of the cavity are maintained at temperatures Th and Tc, respectively, with Th>Tc. The enclosure’s top and bottom walls, as well as, the inactive parts of its side walls are kept insu...
