N/O-trends in Late-Type Galaxies: AGB-stars, IMFs, Abundance Gradients and the Origin of Nitrogen

چکیده

Models of galactic chemical evolution (CEMs) show that the shape of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and other assumptions regarding star formation affect the resultant abundance gradients in models of late-type galaxies. Furthermore, intermediate mass (IM) stars undeniably play an important role in the buildup of nitrogen abundances in galaxies. Here I specifically discuss the nitrogen contribution from IM/AGB stars and how it affects the N/Ogradient. For this purpose I have modelled the chemical evolution of a few nearby disc galaxies using different IMFs and star formation prescriptions. It is demonstrated that N/O-gradients may be used to constrain the nitrogen contribution from IM/AGB-stars.

Using a chemical evolution model we investigate the intriguing suggestion that there are populations of stars in some globular clusters (e.g. NGC 2808, ω Centauri) with enhanced levels of helium (Y ∼ 0.28 to 0.40) compared to the majority of the population that presumably have a primordial helium abundance. We assume that a previous generation of massive low-metallicity Asymptotic Giant Branch ...

Carbon Stars and Nucleosynthesis in Galaxies

The role of carbon stars in the build-up of chemical elements in galaxies is discussed on the basis of stellar evolution calculations and estimated stellar yields, abundance analyses of AGB stars, galactic-evolution models and abundance trends among solar-type disk stars. We conclude that the AGB stars in general, and carbon stars in particular, probably are main contributors of s-elements, tha...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Simulating a White Dwarf-dominated Galactic Halo

Observational evidence has suggested the possibility of a Galactic halo which is dominated by white dwarfs (WDs). While debate continues concerning the interpretation of this evidence, it is clear that an initial mass function (IMF) biased heavily toward WD precursors (1<m/M⊙<8), at least in the early Universe, would be necessary in generating such a halo. Within the framework of homogeneous, c...

The Chemical Evolution of LSB Galaxies

We have derived oxygen and nitrogen abundances of a sample of late-type, low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Furthermore, we have computed a large grid (5000 models) of chemical evolution models (CEMs) testing various time-scales for infall, baryon densities and several power-law initial mass functions (IMFs) as well. Because of the rather stable ...
