Endothelial permeability of the living cornea to fluorescein.

چکیده
A new method was developed for the analysis of fluorescein exchange between the aqueous humor and cornea which enables calculation of the permeability coefficient of the corneal endothelium and the steady-state aqueous-cornea distribution ratio from one experiment. After intravenous fluorescein injection, aqueous and corneal fluorescence was measured at intervals, using an objective fluorophotometer. Application of the method to normal human and rabbit gave the following average values: the permeability coefficient, 3.0 ± 0.50 x 10-" cm. seer in the human and 5.1 ± 0.8 x 10-" cm. seer in the rabbit, and the distribution ratio, 0.64 ± 0.10 in the human and 0.61 ± 0.12 in the rabbit.

Endothelial function in patients with cornea guttata.
Measurements of corneal thickness, endothelial cell size, endothelial permeability to fluorescein, and intraocular pressure were made in two groups of human subjects: 21 persons with cornea guttata (early Fuchs dystrophy without epithelial edema) and 17 persons age- and sex-matched but with normal corneas. Statistically significant differences were found between the two groups in all four measu...
متن کاملCorneal endothelial function and structure following cryo-injury in the rabbit.
Wide-field specular microscopy, fluorophotometry, pachymetry, and scanning electron microscopy are used to characterize a reproducible, in vivo model of corneal endothelial injury and recovery in the rabbit. Following an 8-mm central cryo-injury, the cornea remains thickened for as long as 3 weeks. Mean endothelial permeability to fluorescein is above normal for 10 days following injury, but by...
متن کاملHuman corneal endothelial permeability to fluorescein and fluorescein glucuronide.
The corneal endothelial permeability coefficient (Pac) for fluorescein and fluorescein glucuronide was determined in ten normal young volunteers. After oral administration of fluorescein, the apparent concentrations of both dyes in the corneal stroma and the anterior chamber were measured by differential fluorometry. The apparent dye levels calculated directly from the in vivo fluorometric meas...
متن کاملIn vivo assessment of corneal barrier function through non-invasive impedance measurements using a flexible probe
The cornea is a transparent structure composed of three layers: the epithelium, the stroma and the endothelium. To maintain its ransparency the stroma remains in a constant state of dehydration. Consequently, any ion flow disorder through the covering layers can compromise the barrier function and, therefore the corneal homeostasis. Since ionic permeability has a fundamental impact on the passi...
متن کاملEffects of the encircling procedure on the aqueous flow rate in retinal detachment eyes: a fluorometric study.
Fluorophotometry was carried out in nine cases of unilateral non-traumatic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment successfully treated by a combination of local buckling and an encircling procedure with a silicone band. After topical instillation of fluorescein the change in its concentration in the anterior chamber was followed, from which the loss rate of the dye from the anterior chamber (k0) and...
