متن کاملA re-evaluation of nutritional goals--not just deficiency counts.
There is considerable controversy about the soundness and relevance of so-called "megavitamin" therapy for various illnesses. In this article it is suggested that this disagreement is caused to a large extent by the use of two very different approaches to nutrition, which are referred to here as the "nutritional need" and "optimal intake" approaches. It is clear that a re-evaluation of the goal...
متن کاملIndividuality in nutritional preferences: a multi-level approach in field crickets
Selection may favour individuals of the same population to differ consistently in nutritional preference, for example, because optimal diets covary with morphology or personality. We provided Southern field crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) with two synthetic food sources (carbohydrates and proteins) and quantified repeatedly how much of each macronutrient was consumed by each individual. We then ...
متن کاملFood hoarding: future value in optimal foraging decisions
Traditionally, optimal foraging theory has been applied to situations in which a forager makes decisions about current resource consumption based on tradeoffs in resource attributes (e.g. caloric intake versus handling time). Food storage, which permits animals to manage the availability of food in space and time, adds a complex dimension to foraging decisions, and may influence the predictions...
