چکیده

In this paper we study AGM contraction and revision of rules using input/output logical theories. We replace propositional formulas in the AGM framework of theory change by pairs of propositional formulas, representing the rule based character of theories, and we replace the classical consequence operator Cn by an input/output logic. The results in this paper suggest that, in general, results from belief base dynamics can be transferred to rule base dynamics, but that a similar transfer of AGM theory change to rule change is much more problematic. First, we generalise belief base contraction to rule base contraction, and show that two representation results of Hansson still hold for rule base contraction. Second, we show that the six socalled basic postulates of AGM contraction are consistent only for some input/output logics, but not for others. In particular, we show that the notorious recovery postulate can be satisfied only by basic output, but not by simple-minded output. Third, we show how AGM rule revision can be defined in terms of AGM rule contraction using the Levi identity. We highlight various topics for further research. AGM, Ranking Theory, and the Many Ways to Cope with Examples

The paper first explains how the ranking-theoretic belief change or conditionalization rules entail all of the standard AGM belief revision and contraction axioms. Those axioms have met a lot of objections and counter-examples, which thus extend to ranking theory as well. The paper argues for a paradigmatic set of cases that the counter-examples can be well accounted for with various pragmatic ...

Contraction in Propositional Logic

The AGM model for the revision and contraction of belief sets provides rationality postulates for each of the two cases. In the context of finite propositional logic, Katsuno and Mendelzon pointed out postulates for the revision of belief bases which correspond to the AGM postulates for the revision of beliefs sets. In this paper, we present postulates for the contraction of propositional belie...

ENTRENCHMENT KINEMATICS 101 yAbhaya

The AGM framework of belief dynamics fails to account for iterated belief change. This paper extends the AGM framework in order to solve this problem. As in the AGM, an epistemic input is represented as a single sentence. Unlike the AGM, however , a belief state is represented as an epistemic entrenchment relation. Three state transition functions { namely, entrenchment expansion, entrenchment ...
