چکیده

During the period 2000–2005, we collected samples of englacial ice, vent water, frazil/anchor ice and stratified basal ice from warm-based outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull and Öræfajökull, Iceland, and analysed them for H, O and D. Results of H analyses show that the stratified basal ice contains H from atmospheric thermonuclear testing and is younger than the englacial ice. Results of the O and D analyses show that frazil/anchor and stratified basal ice are both enriched by an average of 2.4% in O and 11% in D relative to vent water. These values are consistent with fractionation during partial freezing of supercooled subglacial water in an open system, one in which the remaining water is continuously removed and replenished by water of similar composition. The isotopic data and field observations do not support either a regelation or a thermal ad-freeze-on origin for the stratified basal ice.

Modelling the 20th and 21st century evolution of Hoffellsjökull glacier, SE-Vatnajökull, Iceland

The Little Ice Age maximum extent of glaciers in Iceland was reached about 1890 AD and most glaciers in the country have retreated during the 20th century. A model for the surface mass balance and the flow of glaciers is used to reconstruct the 20th century retreat history of Hoffellsjökull, a south-flowing outlet glacier of the ice cap Vatnajökull, which is located close to the southeastern co...

A method for estimating ice mass loss from relative InSAR observations: Application to the Vatnajökull ice cap, Iceland

[1] We present a new method for estimating ice mass loss from glaciers and ice sheets using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) time-series data. We use a linear inversion method based on observations of nearby bedrock uplift and a solution for surface loading of an elastic half-space. The method assumes that mass loss is focused on lower elevation terminal regions of the glacier o...

Will Present Day Glacier Retreat Increase Volcanic Activity? Stress induced by Recent Glacier Retreat and its Effect on Magmatism at the Vatnajökull ice cap, Iceland

Global warming causes retreat of ice caps and ice sheets. Can melting glaciers trigger increased volcanic activity? Since 1890 the largest ice cap of Iceland, Vatnajökull, with an area of ~8000 km, has been continuously retreating losing about 10% of its mass during last century. Present-day uplift around the ice cap is as high as 25 mm/yr. We evaluate interactions between ongoing glacio-isosta...

Plastic bed beneath Hofsjökull Ice Cap, central Iceland, and the sensitivity of ice flow to surface meltwater flux

The mechanical properties of glacier beds play a fundamental role in regulating the sensitivity of glaciers to environmental forcing across a wide range of timescales. Glaciers are commonly underlain by deformable till whose mechanical properties and influence on ice flow are not well understood but are critical for reliable projections of future glacier states. Using synoptic-scale observation...

Did changes in the Subpolar North Atlantic trigger the recent mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet?

The Greenland Ice Sheet's (GIS) contribution to sea level rise more than doubled in the last seven years due to a surprisingly rapid (and unpredicted) mass loss. The loss was not so much a result of increased surface melt but, rather, of ice loss due to the widespread and nearly-simultaneous acceleration of several outlet glaciers in Greenland’s western and southeastern sectors [Rignot and Kana...
