Applications of Image Processing to Mine Warfare Sonar
نویسنده
چکیده
It is the intention of the author that this report serve as a strategic review of the potential for image processing techniques to aid the detection and classification of underwater mines and mine-like objects in various modes of sonar imagery. Image processing techniques to improve the performance of mine hunting operations using sector-scan, side-scan and the Acoustic Mine Imaging (AMI) project imagery are considered. Four basic components of any Computer-Aided Detection and Classification (CADCAC) technique are considered, namely, enhancement, segmentation, computer-aided detection, and computer-aided classification. In each of these fields, image processing techniques from the literature are examined and possible extensions or alternatives are discussed. متن کاملMine Classification based on a Multiview Characterisation
In the context of mine warfare, detected mines can be classified from their cast shadow. A standard solution is to perform image segmentation first, and then to extract a set of features from the shape allowing classification in a final step. In this paper, we extend this procedure to a sequence of images obtained along a part of a circular trajectory of the sonar. For a given ground mine excep...

This is a review chapter that surveys past work in, and the recent status of image processing and other related techniques involved in the detection and classification of man made objects in side scan sonar images. Side scan sonar is a readily, available and cheap device which has found increasing applications, specially for military purposes such as Computer Aided Detection (CAD) and Classific...
متن کاملInterferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar for AUV Based Mine Hunting: The SENSOTEK projekt
Synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) is emerging as an ideal sensor for autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) based mine hunting and numerous other applications. By using vehicle motion to create a long synthetic array, image resolution can be increased by an order of magnitude or more compared to traditional side scan sonars. The SAS technology is also well suited for interferometric processing, facil...
متن کاملTarget detection in side-scan sonar images: expert fusion reduces false alarms
We integrate several key components of a pattern recognition system for a mine-like targets detection problem. These include several image enhancements, postprocessing and multi-expert fusion. The image enhancement includes wavelet de-noising and classical computer vision methods such as nonlinear and adaptive equalization and other filters. Our approach attempts to make the different experts a...
