Extended Therapy for Mastitis Control in Dairy Cows
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction: Extended therapy applied to mastitis treatment consists in treating cows for a longer period than labeled. The typical treatment of 1 to 3 days depending on the product is extended up to 8 consecutive days. Those treatments are mainly used to treat chronic subclinical mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) or Streptococcus uberis (Str. uberis) but they can also be used to treat clinical mastitis. The objective of this presentation is to review the extended therapy principles and treatment regimens. Most antibiotics use for intramammary infusion treatment are time-dependent. This characteristic means that the efficacy of the antibiotic is proportional to the time of contact with the susceptible organism, as long as it is above an effective concentration called the minimal inhibitory concentration. This characteristic and the fact that labeled intramammary antibiotic treatments of 1 or 2 days have low cure rates on some chronic subclinical mastitis, have led veterinarians and researchers to apply extended therapy to mastitis treatment.

The objective of the present study was to compare the efficacy of conventional and extendedintramammary (IMM) therapy of persistent subclinical mastitis in lactating dairy cattle using nafcillinpenicillin-dihydrostreptomycin combination (NPD). Sixty-five dairy cows with 126 infected quarters were enrolled in the study. Infected cows were allocated randomly to 1 of 3 different treatment regimens...

Group G streptococci in animals usually belong to the species Streptococcus canis and are most commonly found in dogs and cats. Occasionally, Strep. canis is detected in milk from dairy cows. An outbreak of Strep. canis mastitis in a dairy herd is described. Based on results from bacterial culture and ribotyping, a cat with chronic sinusitis was the most likely source of the outbreak. Subsequen...

The objective of the present study was to determine whether there was an association between the in vitroantimicrobial sensitivity test results of subclinical mastitis pathogensand bacteriological cure following intramammary treatment using a combination of nafcillin, penicillin, and streptomycin (NPS). Eighty-six intramammary pathogens from 43 cows were examined inthis study. Most intramammary...
