چکیده

This first stage experiment is a Proof-of-Principle to support our novel vacuum laser acceleration (VLA) theory, published previously. Simulations show that based on current experimental conditions at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Accelerator Test Facility (ATF), an electron beam with initial energy of 15 MeV can get net energy gain from an intense CO2 laser beam. The difference of electron beam energy spread is observable by the ATF beam line diagnostics system. Further this energy spread expansion effect increases along with the laser intensity increasing. The proposal has been approved by the ATF committee, and this experiment will be the next project.

Vacuum Laser Acceleration Tests

We propose to test for the possibility of accelerating an electron beam (utilizing the existing high-power CO2 laser and low emittance electron beam at Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility) in vacuum to the current CO2 laser power limit. The latest vacuum laser acceleration results can be verified [1] by the schemes discussed here.

Fulfilling the Mission of Brookhaven Atf as Doe’s Flagship User Facility in Accelerator Stewardship*

The Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at Brookhaven National Laboratory has served as a user facility for accelerator science for over a quarter of a century. In bringing advanced accelerator-science and technology to individual users, small groups of researchers, and large collaborations, the ATF offers a unique combination of a high-brightness 80-MeV electron beam synchronized to a Terawatt-cla...

SLAC PROPOSAL E-163 August 24, 2001 Laser Acceleration of Electrons in Vacuum

Laser-powered acceleration of charged particles promises extraordinary acceleration gradients due to the immense power available from lasers. This possibility has led to many proposed structures for laser acceleration; however, the field of vacuum laser acceleration is almost wholly unexplored experimentally. Recent advances in laser efficiency and phase synchronization have made possible a pra...

Optimal Parameters of the Photocathode Gun Space Charge to Improve Beam Quality

Accelerator Test Facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL ATF) operates with 5 MeV photocathode gun and 70 MeV linac for different range of experiments with a few picoseconds and a few micrometers emittance electron bunch. Many conducted experiments require beam with good spatial resolution and short length as well. NdYaG laser pulse turns to the electron bunch in the gun with space char...

The Mechanical and Shielding Design of a Portable Spectrometer and Beam Dump Assembly at BNL’s Accelerator Test Facility

A portable assembly containing a vertical-bend dipole magnet has been designed and installed immediately down-beam of the Compton electron-laser interaction chamber on beamline 1 of the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The watercooled magnet designed with field strength of up to 0.7 Tesla will be used as a spectrometer in the Thompson scattering and vacuu...
