چکیده
Aims. The purpose of this study is to explore the population of X-ray point sources in the bulge of M31, with the primary goal to contrast properties of various subpopulations, such as persistent and transient sources, primordial LMXBs and dynamically formed ones. Methods. Based on the data from 26 archival Chandra observations we study the source content and properties of various subpopu-lations of X-ray sources to a maximum distance of 12 ′ from the centre of M31. Results. To a limiting luminosity of ∼ 10 35 erg s −1 we find 263 X-ray point sources, with ∼ 1/3 of these being background galaxies. A study of the spatial distribution and the luminosity function of the X-ray sources shows that the distribution of primordial LMXBs is consistent with the distribution of the K-band light and that their luminosity function flattens below ∼ 10 37 erg s −1 to the dN/dL ∝ L −1 law in agreement with the behaviour found earlier for LMXBs in the Milky Way and in Cen A. Within a radius of 12 ′ , the luminosity function is independent of distance to the centre of M31 in contrast to earlier Chandra studies. The LMXBs located in globular clusters and within ∼ 1 ′ from the centre of M31 are presumably created via dynamical interactions. The dynamical origin of the r < 1 ′ sources is strongly suggested by their radial distribution which follows the ρ 2 * profile rather than the K-band light distribution. Their luminosity function shows a prominent fall-off below log(L X) < ∼ 36.5. Although the statistics is insufficient to claim a genuine low-luminosity cutoff in the luminosity function, the best fit powerlaw with a slope of-0.6±0.2 is significantly flatter than the dN/dL ∝ L −1 law. We also searched for transients and found 28 sources that varied by a factor larger than 20. Their spatial distribution follows the distribution of the persistent LMXBs within the accuracy allowed by the limited number of transients.

Population synthesis of classical low-mass X-ray binaries in the Galactic Bulge
Aims. We model the present-day population of classical low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) with neutron star accretors, which have hydrogen-rich donor stars. Their population is compared with that of hydrogen-deficient LMXBs, known as ultracompact X-ray binaries (UCXBs). We model the observable LMXB population and compare it to observations. We model the Galactic Bulge because it contains a well-ob...

We study the population of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) in the Galactic bulge using the deep survey of this region by the IBIS telescope aboard the INTEGRAL observatory. Thanks to the increased sensitivity with respect to previous surveys of this field, we succeeded to probe the luminosity function (LF) of LMXBs down to ∼ 7 × 10 erg s in the 17–60 keV energy band. The slope d logN/d logL = −...
متن کاملThe dynamical formation of LMXBs in dense stellar environments : globular clusters and the inner bulge of M 31
The radial distribution of luminous (L X > 10 36 erg s −1) X-ray point sources in the bulge of M31 is investigated using archival Chandra observations. We find a significant increase of the specific frequency of X-ray sources, per unit stellar mass, within 1 arcmin from the centre of the galaxy. The radial distribution of surplus sources in this region follows the ρ 2 * law, suggesting that the...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effects of Cold Bulge Forming Speed on Thickness Variation and Mechanical Properties of Aluminum Alloys: Experimental and Numerical
In this work, cold bulge forming of an Aluminium-Magnesium (Al-Mg) sheet with a solid bulging medium is performed experimentally and numerically. Mechanical properties and thickness variations of Al-Mg sheet are evaluated before and after the forming process. The results indicated that the Al-Mg sheet has taken the desired shape without necking using the cold bulge forming process. Also, the...
متن کاملThe Luminosity Function of X - ray point sources in Centaurus A
We have studied the X-ray point source population of Centaurus A (NGC 5128) using data from four archival CHANDRA observations. We detected 272 point-like X-ray sources within a radius of 10 ′ from the centre. Approximately half of these are CXB sources, with the remaining half being LMXBs. The spatial distribution of the LMXBs, both azimuthally averaged and 2-D, is consistent with the distribu...
