On the Spectrum of Nerve Cuff Electrode Recordings

چکیده

INTRODUCTION In the literature on recording of the electroneurogram (ENG) with nerve cuff electrodes, the influence of the contact configuration and cuff parameters on the amplitude density spectrum is hardly addressed. In contrast, in the literature on electromyography (EMG), the influence of the recording electrode configuration on the EMG spectrum is well recognized, including the dependency on action potential velocity [ 1, 21. However, an important assumption is always that at each electrode the same signal is present, apart from a conduction velocity dependent time shift. In EMG recordings this assumption may be a reasonable approximation, in nerve cuff recordings it is definitely wrong, and the presence of the cuff itself has to be accounted for.

Whole Nerve Recordings with the Spiral Nerve Cuff Electrode

The feasibility of whole nerve recordings from the hypoglossal (HG) nerve is demonstrated in acute cats using the spiral nerve cuff electrode. A good contact between the nerve and the electrodes, provided by the spiral nerve cuff due to its self-coiling property, should improve the signal-tonoise ratio. An instrumentation amplifier with very low input noise characteristics is also utilized. The...

Spiral nerve cuff electrode for recordings of respiratory output.

The feasibility of using the spiral nerve cuff electrode design for recordings of respiratory output from the hypoglossal (HG) and phrenic nerves is demonstrated in anesthetized, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated cats. Raw neural discharges of the HG nerve were analyzed in terms of signal-to-noise ratios and frequency spectra. The rectified and integrated moving average activity of the HG ...

Possibilities offered by implantable miniaturized cuff-electrodes for insect neurophysiology

Recent advances in microsystems technology led to a miniaturization of cuff-electrodes, which suggests these electrodes not just for long-term neuronal recordings in mammalians, but also in medium-sized insects. In this study we investigated the possibilities offered by cuff-electrodes for neuroethology using insects as a model organism. The implantation in the neck of a tropical bushcricket re...

Signal-to-noise Ratio of Nerve Signals Recorded with Full and Open Cylinder Cuff Electrodes

Ab-& In this paper, we compared the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of nerve recordings obtained with an open cuff (a 270" cylinder) and a full cylindrical electrode (simulated by lifting the open electrode outside the solution) using an in vitro set-up. The thermal noise was considered as the main source of noise. The SNR with the open cuff was only 52*7% (n=3) less than that of a full cylindric...
