KVET&ANSK+, RICHARD, GEORGE P. EEWIRTZ, VIRGINIA K. WEISE, AND IRWIN J. KOPIN. CQtacholamine-synthesizing enzymes in the rat adrmal gland during exposuw to cold. Am. J, Physiol. 220(4) : 928-931. 1971 .-Rats were continuously exposed to a temperature of 3 C for 1, 7, 21, or 42 days. Adrenal epinephrine was decreased after I day but had returned to control levels at 7, 21, or 42 days. Adrenal norepinephrine was unchanged from controls after 1 day but increased after 7, 21, or 42 days. Levels of adrenal tyrosine hydroxylase were significantly increased after 7 or 21 days of exposure, but returned to control levels after 42 days. Dopamine-/3-hydroxylase levels were increased 1, 7, and 21 days after exposure; after 42 days the activity was less than that found after 21 days but higher than that in control animals. Adrenal phenylethanolamine-N-methyl transferase levels did not increase to the same extent as tyrosine hydroxylase or dopamine-p-hy.droxylase levels. Phenylethanolamine-N-methyl transferase was increased after 7 or 21 days of exposure but not after 42 days. The initial rise and subsequent return toward normal levels in adrenal enzyme levels follows previously reported patterns of urinary excretion of epinephrine and norepinephrine found during cold exposure and coincides with the reported development of increased sensitivity of the tissues to catecholamines.

Effects of Noise Exposure on the Volume of Adrenal Gland and Serum Levels of Cortisol in Rat
Background: Noise pollution is considered as a stressful factor in every day’s life of the industrial world. The present study was designed to investigate the probable effects of different time exposure of noise stress on histomorphometric changes of adrenal gland, plasma cortisol and body weight of the rat. Methods: Sixty adult male Wistar rats were divided into two series of short time noise ...
متن کاملExposure to cell phone radiofrequency changes corticotrophin hormone levels and histology of the brain and adrenal glands in male Wistar rat
Objective(s): Nowadays, the electromagnetic field-emitting devices are used routinely in our lives. Controversial reports exist concerning the effects of mobile radiofrequency (RF) on different parts of the body, especially stress hormones. The main goal of the present work was to study the long-term effects of mobile RF900 MHz exposure with special focus on the adrenal gland pathophysiology an...
متن کاملRelation between Proepileptic Activity of Indomethacin and Adrenal Gland Hormones
The role of inflammation has been shown in the pathogenesis of epilepsy, while glucocorticoids and adrenaline have anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of adrenaline, prednisolone, and indomethacin on caffeine-induced epilepsy (epileptiform activity) in rats and to examine the mechanism of the pro-epileptic effect of indomethacin. The adrenalect...

متن کاملTyrosine hydroxylase activity and catecholamine biosynthesis in the adrenal medulla of rats during stress.
Chronic hypotension and hypoglycemia are known to increase the capacity for catecholamine biosynthesis in the rat adrenal medulla by increasing the maximal velocity of the rate-limiting enzyme, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). The present report indicates that the gradual increase in maximal TH activity is preceded by a more rapid increase in the affinity of TH for its pterin cofactor. These short-te...
