Applications of Virtual Auditory Displays
نویسنده
چکیده
Current technology makes it possible to simulate naturally-occurring spatial auditory cues quite accurately. However, the cost of such a system is not justifiable, or even desirable, for all applications. This paper surveys some of the applications currently using virtual auditory displays and some of the issues important in the design of virtual auditory displays. Keywords—virtual environments, spatial hearing

Customizable Auditory Displays
High-quality virtual audio scene rendering is a must for emerging virtual and augmented reality applications, for perceptual user interfaces, and sonification of data. Personalization of HRTF is necessary in applications where perceptual realism and correct elevation perception is critical. We describe algorithms for creation of virtual auditory spaces by rendering cues that arise from anatomic...
متن کاملInteractions in Perceived Quality of Auditory-Visual Displays
The quality of realism in virtual environments (VEs) is typically considered to be a function of visual and audio fidelity mutually exclusive of each other. However, the VE participant, being human, is multimodal by nature. Therefore, in order to validate more accurately the levels of auditory and visual fidelity that are required in a virtual environment, a better understanding is needed of th...
متن کاملNear-Field Virtual Audio Displays
Although virtual audio displays are capable of realistically simulating relatively distant sound sources, they are not yet able to accurately reproduce the spatial auditory cues that occur when sound sources are located near the listener’s head. Researchers have long recognized that the binaural difference cues that dominate auditory localization are independent of distance beyond 1 m but chang...
متن کاملControl and Measurement of Apparent Sound Source Width and its Applications to Sonification and Virtual Auditory Displays
The aim of this paper is to investigate the possibility of using the spatial extent of sound sources as a mean of carrying information in sonification designs. To do so, we studied the accuracy of the perception of artificially produced sound source extent in a 3D audio environment. We found that the source extent perceived by subjects matched relatively well the intended source extent. Thus so...
متن کاملContributors to 3D Perception of Sound
A study was conducted to evaluate the role of individualized head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) for localization accuracy and the experience of realism using auditory displays. Realistic auditory displays that emulate free field auditory sound sources are required for efficient and effective design of virtual reality systems for real-world applications, including teleconferencing and inter...
