A point particle approximation to the classical dynamics of well separated vortices of the abelian Higgs model is developed. The asymptotic static intervortex potential is calculated and used to model type II vortex scattering. A velocity dependent interaction Lagrangian for critically coupled vortices is derived, and reinterpreted geometrically to obtain a conjecture for the asymptotic form of the metric on the two-vortex moduli space, as used in the geodesic approximation. The scattering of critically coupled vortices is calculated.

We have obtained measurements of the total cross section for e + e − annihilation into hadronic final states for 6 energy points (2.6, 3.2, 2.4, 3.55, 4.6, and 5.0 GeV) with the upgraded Beijing Spectrometer (BESII). We report preliminary values from this data and outline future plans for a finer scan in the 2-5 GeV energy range.

Models of string cosmology predict a stochastic background of gravitational waves with a spectrum that is strongly tilted towards high frequencies. I give simple approximate expressions for spectral densities of the cosmic background which can be directly compared with sensitivities of gravitational wave detectors.
