Most Meanings Are Superlative

چکیده
Recent research on the semantics of quantificational expressions has taken on the task of relating the truth-conditional import of quantifiers with their impact on verification procedures. In particular, the semantic analysis and verification procedures associated with the proportional quantifier most have been studied in a variety of ways in an effort to reveal the correct semantic analysis of most. This paper presents new experimental evidence in favor of a treatment that analyzes most uniformly as a superlative construction built in the syntax, rather than a quantificational determiner with rich internal semantics that does not, however, interface with syntax any more than other lexical determiners do. The evidence comes in the form of a latent superlative reading of sentences with most in subject position, like most of the dots are blue. We show, using three different experiments involving verification tasks, that most is ambiguous in this environment between a dominant proportional reading and a latent superlative reading.

Scalar quantifiers: Logic, acquisition, and processing
Superlative quantifiers (“at least 3”, “at most 3”) and comparative quantifiers (“more than 2”, “fewer than 4”) are traditionally taken to be interdefinable: the received view is that “at least n” and “at most n” are equivalent to “more than n–1” and “fewer than n+1”, respectively. Notwithstanding the prima facie plausibility of this claim, Geurts and Nouwen (2007) argue that superlative quanti...

متن کاملAt Least Et Al.: the Semantics of Scalar Modifiers
On the naive account of scalar modifiers like more than and at least, At least three girls snored is synonymous with More than two girls snored, and both sentences mean that the number of snoring girls exceeded two (the same, mutatis mutandis, for sentences with at most and less/fewer than). We show that this is false and propose an alternative theory, according to which superlative modifiers (...
متن کاملRaising and resolving issues with scalar modifiers
We argue that the superlative modifiers at least and at most quantify over a scale of answers to the current question under discussion (and in this sense, resolve issues), and that they draw attention to the individual possibilities along the scale (and in this sense, raise issues for discussion). The point of departure is a simple analysis on which at least denotes what only presupposes, and a...
متن کاملThree Readings of Most
In this paper we show that most DPs in subject position can receive three kinds of truth-conditions, yielding a proportional reading, a ‘regular’ superlative reading and a ‘partition-based’ superlative reading. We propose an analysis of the three readings that views them as resulting from the interaction of several components, including (a generalized version of) the superlative operator -est, ...
